60k Service - Timing Belt

Sorry again - a bit more on changing the timing belt at 60K:

;)

Just to add to this: One local branch dealer tells me over the phone that at 60K the timing belt doesn't need replacing, only the air filter. On Saturday I receive a letter from the dealer I use, telling me that "they estimate that the timing belt is due for replacement".

In their opinion - "It is essential that the timing belt on your vehicle be replaced every 60,000 miles or 60 months......". "If the timing belt does become worn and is not replaced, there is a danger it may snap......causing extensive damage to your vehicles engine....".

So two main Toyota dealers are telling me different stories....which is right? Whats your opinion?

From the description under your Avatar you have a 1.8L VVTi. This means a 1ZZ engine and it has a timing chain internal to the engine and not a timing belt (it does have an auxillary belt on the outside that posers the alternator, power steering and aircon)

Timing chain will NOT need replacing for about anouther 60k. If they mean the auxillary belt it should cost next to nothing since it is only a rubber belt that takes 5 minutes with a spanner to change

hi just to back up what black knight has said the vvt-i untis use a timing chain the only belt you would have to change would be power steering, air con alternator that may need changing. I think that the D4-D diesels on the other hand are a timing belt feel free to correct if wrong.

Nope steve, you're correct.

The 2 litre D4D uses a timing belt but deckie's description says 1.8VVT-i so shouldn't be a diesel

yeah i noticed that cos me dads also got a 1.8 vvt-i avensis and he to was sent a reminder to have his timing belt changed, seem that a few toyota dealers dont know what drives the vvt-i units

Also only mentioned about the diesels so vvt-i owners need not worry about timing belts where as d4-d diesel owners should.

what about the 2.0L vvt-i D4 Petrol 2002 is this belt or chain driven?

All Avensis 97-00 have timing belts like the Carina E and need changing 5 years or 60,000 miles, all VVti engined Avensis 00 onwards all have timing chains with no need to change at all, except D4D as has been said before which needs belt changing 60,000 miles or 5 years.
