Hi-new member here!Anyway just bought new 2005 Corolla XRS.I would like know what grade of fuel some of you XRS owners are using. The dealer said it was ok use regular unleaded(87 octane) for normal driving. They even filled it up with 87 before we drove it off the lot. From what I've read 91 should be used. There has been no sign if pinging or knocking with normal driving.Would like to hear any thoughts or experience .thanks.

Welcome to the club

I believe your Corolla XRS is the equivalent to our Corolla T-Sport? if so, i dont think regular unleaded is going to do the engine any harm, but you may find that you get slightly better performance and possibly MPG with higher octane fuel

I wait to be corrected on that though :P

oh, and have lots of fun with the 'lift' :D

i noticed higher MPG when using optimax! isn't that 98 Ron? and our standard 95?

why do so many other countrys use lower grade fuel?

What consumption do you get? I've only got a humble 1.4 vvti engine, and although it runs smoother on optimax round town, I still struggle to get above 40mpg on average, unless its just me and I'm cruising on the motorway for hours (best ever average for a tank was 49mpg, but that was driving all night in the middle of the night :) )

Optimax is supposed to be 98 RON, but god knows what UK 'premium' unleaded is - I think it varies from 91-95 RON depending on where you buy. I think in the US and others the petrol is lower RON than that though, so the engines are probably set up differently ECU wise for use there.

Thanks for the replies.Have only used 1 tank of fuel so far. Will find out better results for MPG after we take a 2400 mile road trip in a few weeks. Here in the U.S(California)87,89 or 91 octane is availlible. Will have to try higher octane later to see any results.

I think the difference between the US Octane rating and the UK Ron rating is around 4 - 5 points, so UK 98 Ron, such as Optimax, would be a US 93/94 Octane.

Or something like that :)
