there is an idle up vavle screw on the inlet mate, it's not in any manaul.

personally i'd try to find out why it's idling so low to start, get your timing checked

cheers mate will check the timing but i think it is ok cos she runs well at higher revs, where on the inlet is the idle valve located and i will try adjusting it that way

:D

Does the gen 4 have closed loop ECU controlled idle speed, via the ISCV?

If so, the valve might be faulty/sludged up or the ECU outputs faulty. If it's got mechanical ISC then there is probably an adjuster screw near the TB.

I don't know if it has a closed loop ECU on it, she has a catalyst fitted if that helps anybody diagnose my problem, i will have a look for any obvious adjustment screws.

Does anybody know of any toyota breakers in kent as i need a few bits cos age is catching up with her youthfull looks cheers guys.

600rpm? That sounds normal to me, every car i've owned has idle'd at around that :)

I was talking about closed loop idle control, not closed loop fueling (which is irrelevant here). I am not sure, but I believe the st162 has an electronic ISCV. Look around the throttle body for motorised valves. The later cars have a 3 pin plug onto it. If you remove the plug, your idle speed should drop - if it doesn't then there is something wrong with the ISCV. It may just be clogged up and need cleaning out.

I agree with Leeky - Is 600rpm really that bad? I've never really looked at the celica but most cars I've seen idle between 600-800rpm (according to the counter)

you can alter the throttle cable to up the tick over as a last resort.

If its running at 600rpm then its using less fuel than it would be at 1000rpm :P

My Corolla idles at around 800rpm
