I Own a 51 plate avensis 1800vvti wife took it to cardiff on the way she rang , oil lights come on, she checked the level (OK) restarted no clattering or banging and no light a couple of miles down the road light comes back on.I rang dealer suggested faulty pressre switch advised to take it in when return. Anyway cut a long story short Engine seized. After recovering car engine out and split Bottom end ok but every exhaust vale smashed and lying ontop of the pistons Hence engine would only turn over approx 90 deg each way. Oil pump , cam chain etc look ok any idears on how this could happen. Car has done 115000 miles.:crybaby::crybaby::crybaby::crybaby::crybaby:

Ouch. The cam chain could have snapped causing valves to mash up, but you say that is OK?

It's an early vvti engine with an oil light warning... sounds like it simply ran out of oil. Were you monitoring the oil consumption of this engine beforehand? :(

If you have a quick read, it says that she checked the oil level. So this could most likely point to oil pump failure, especially as the oil pressure lamp was coming on.

Well, I didn't want to mention she may have been mistaken? He said the oil pump looks fine too

The oil level was ok when i got it back it had been using about 1/2 ltr for every 1200 miles.. the oil pump is ok but even so i still can't workout why it would destoy all the exhaust valves. Now on the look out for another engine so if anyone knows any breakers with toyota engines :yes:

Ok, the light comes on because it's an oil pressure switch. First mistake was trying to drive with that on and I'm sorry to say that the dealer sounds a complete muppet. If oil pressure warning light is on it's going to be pretty terminal.

The engine has seized because you've lost oil pressure somehow.

Oil pump is driven directly off the nose of the crank therefore the only way it could lose pressure is if the pump itself malfunctions (stuck pressure relief valve somehow) or there's a breach/blockage to one of the oil galleries.

Very difficult to diagnose without being able to look at parts but it's possibly the oil pressure relief valve sticking open. Valves there to stop over pressure of the system at high RPM. If that's stuck open it may have caused low pressure problem at low RPM.

As I said though purely a guess based on your description

  • 2 weeks later...

Just about to start putting another engine in the old one is out and in bits. Went to dealer to try and establish why or how they were as baffled as me APPARENTLY they have never heard of such a problem.

But according to the comments it's not an oil consumption problem!

As Avensis9 says his wife checked the oil level and it was fine when the light came on and then he double checked it later
