Avensis Hydraulic Clutch Question

Hi all,

Is it possible to adjust the clutch on my 1998 1.8GS Avensis? I understand the clutch is hydraulic. The reason I ask is because the biting point on the clutch pedal is very high almost when the pedal has totally been released. Does this mean the clutch is on its way out?

Many Thanks

Adam

Generally speaking they aren't adjustable. However, it may have gone tight at some stage so therefore over adjusted or something.

You could start by bleeding the clutch circuit, at the slave cylinder (on the gearbox).

Otherwise, if you don't see any change after doing that, then the clutch is most likely toward the end of it's life.

You can adjust the clutch on the Avensis, and it is quiet important to get it right, You must have an amount of free play in the pushrod between the master cylinder and the peddle or the release bearing will be under presure all the time. The Haynes manual for the Carina e shows you how, Thats if you cant find an AVensis manual. Jim.

That's just clutch pedal to cylinder adjustment. Unless the nuts have come loose, this should never change. The cylinder has a fixed travel, as do all hydraulic cylinders of this type.

If the clutch has become heavy it is a sign the clutch is on its way out. A neighbour had the same high biting point but his clutch needed a lot of pressure to operate it.

Stuart, I after your last coment i took a further look at the chapter on the clutch for the Carina E (its the only book i have) but think it will be the same as the Avensis, Read it and now see where i was wrong,Right or wrong though i did set the peddle height to a position which is comfortable to my driving . Anyway thanks for keeping me right on this, Jim.

Yeah, that would be it then.

The master cylinder is a fixed length. The pedal should be adjusted with a small gap between it and the fully extended cylinder (as you have seen).

Thanks for the help guys, the pedal is certainly not heavy but is definately high, going to take it to a local garage to get it fixed.

Cheers

Adam
