Front Fog Lights Or Road Lights?

So...

On a different tack from the other questions about fogged fog lights...

Are the front fog lights just fog lights?

When I had a ikle XR2 for a while

the front fog lights were described as "Road Lights"

They lit the road just in front of the car and were fab for country lanes where full beam and dipped main lights worked well for the road, but the road lights filled in the blanks.

I now have a T3-x - with front "fog" lights.

are these too bright to use as "road lights"

I have seen them on, on other cars but shy away from using them for this purpose

as they may be too bright, angled wrong etc etc...

So, do you?

or are they solely Fog Lights - never to be used in unfoggy conditions???

I too have pondered the use of the lights.

My opinion is that they are Driving Lights, to be used in conjunction with the dipped beam headlights or just sidelights.

The only time I encountered real “fog”, I turned on the front fog lights and the fog simply reflected the light straight back at me.

The problem with using them when there is no fog, is the succession of oncoming cars whose drivers think that they are purely fog lights.

I wondered that...

the only time i have been in fog thick enough that lights could make it better, turning on main beam only succeded in reflecting all that light back to me.

So, I can't see the fog lights doing any better

Hmmm...

Right rural wiltshire - look out, i'm gonna give it a go

the way i look at it road/driving light should come on wen u have high beam on thats it

I think you are right. If these lights were road lights they would be wired up to main beam like the old double headlights were. After market driving/spot lights were supposed to be fitted at the same height as the headlights to fill the gap between. The Avensis ones are positioned as foglights - can't remember the exact distance from the ground (somebody will know I'm sure) but there is a legal requirement.

Also - as far as I know you can be stopped and charged for using foglights when conditions are clear.

If you use fogs when it's not foggy you should be dragged out your car and slapped ..

FIRST AGAINST THE WALL COME THE REVOLUTION !!

(sorry, pet hate of mine)

Ooooh Bibbs what you doing slumming down here in the grandads section? hehe! As to the question. I reckon they are fog lights purely because the switch to operate them works the rear fogs as well. As was mentioned, if they were driving lights, they should come on with main beam only, IMHO.

  • 2 weeks later...

According to my dealer it is illegal to use the New Avensis fog lights for normal driviving at night. They are what the hand book says: fog lights and should be only used in fog.

 I agree,

aldo they are forbiden for normal weather conditions, they bother other drivers a lot. They seem to point only at the front of the car but their beam is different so they hurt other's eyes. I hate people that use them in normal conditions, at open road. What are they trying to prove?? "Look at me, here I am, I have fog lights, I'm the man..."

Stupid...

I know they improve visibility, but don't maximum lights do it as well. If we all go by improving visibility without thinking about others, let's all drive with maximum (long range) lights to see if we were cool enough. :crutchy:

I use my fogs during the day but they dont seem to annoy any1, as far as i can tell they aim down towards the ground rather than on the level.. have always driven with my sidelights on during the day, at least no1 can say that they didn't notice me! but by night my fogs go off and i use the main beam as per usual.

Calm down - Calm down

I started this thread as an innocent enquiry only

no need for the flaming torches and pitch forks!

While I agree about fogs, especially rear ones on when not foggy

The Avensis that I have seen with front fogs on were not dazzling

hence the question

Good Greef you people, Chill Out :P

Quite so - shouldn't get irate. ;)

Maybe it's because the people I see using fogs when it's fine are mostly about 3 feet from my back bumper! :D
