Yaris Uneven Braking

Hi,

I have a late 2000 Yaris 1.0GS. Under hard braking the car feels very unstable and on several occasions I heve had the O/S rear brake lock up. The situation improves if I give the brakes some hard use for a while.

Has anyone had a similar problem.

Cheers,

Mark

Hiya,

Sorry to hear of the problem, the only problem I find is after cleaning my Yaris Blue sometimes the pads get "locked" against the other part of the brake (sudden mind blank & can't remember the proper name). It gets better after a drive around for a while with braking quite a bit.

Have the pads etc been checked recently?

Could be that your caliper needs a quick grease up and rebuild, as pistons could be sticking, cause the pad to stay out against the disk.

Check the pads and have a look at how much is left on them.

Yeah.....I remember reading in the manual if your brakes squeek when applied or when braking you veer to one side your pads need changing!

I'll try to get time to have a look at the pads this weekend It has only done

I did have a propblem a couple of years ago with the hand brake ceased on after it had been stood for a few weeks this may have something to do with it.

Cheers,

Mark

Could be that Mark.

It may sort itself out as the top layer wears off.

Used to be that overheating pads sometimes got a glazed surface which you would need to file off to renovate them. Don't know if that applies to todays compounds or not.

You can get your Toyota garage to check it out for free I think - see their website re free safety checks.

On my last car, loads of owners were complaining about vented disks rusting from the inside - usually this was caused by people washing the car at which point water seeped into the vents and result was premature failure of the disks which cost about £800 a set. That got me into the habit of taking the car for a spin after I'd washed it - in order to heat the disks and get rid of any water. I think that probably helps avoid other brake problems too as you don't have that nasty rust build up that you can get otherwise.

If the rear is locking up..something is not right! Breaking force is around 66 % front 35% rear, also doesn't the 1.0 GS model have drums at the rear not calipers

if so they are definitly binding. Also check how hot your hubs are after a drive..check all corners...is the rear o's hotter than the rest...bet it is.

when i had TTE coilovers in mine it was very nervous under heavy reaking. but that what due partly because the front left damper in the TTE suspension was :censor: .

  • 1 month later...

Couldn'f find time to look at the brakes myself so I took it to a back street guy who was reccomended by a mate. He couldn't find anything wrong but gave them a good strip down, clean and adjustement.

Wow what a difference Much more progressive braking and I haven't had the rear one lock up again. I reckon the main dealer hasn't never stripped them down.

The brake overall and a service (I supplied the oil and filters) cost me just £20.

Don't reckon Mr Toyota will be seeing the old girl again.

Other thing Ive found in the past is that the spring clips that hold the pads in place can need pushed back into their slots in the pads.
