Problem!

Washed my car on Sunday and just went to go out in it there. Started her up and released the handbrake and went to pull away only to discover it wasn't going anywhere and it felt like the handbrake was still on. Gave it a bit more gas and there was a clunking noise at the rear and it was as if the shoes/pads in the drums had released or something.

Anyone have any idea's? This is the 2nd time its happened and only seems to happen a day or 2 after I wash it!

P.S. Its not yet cold enough for them to freeze on even though I live in Scotland! :P

actually my old 1 litre was recalled due to the back brakes being able to freeze on in extreme conditions and had the rear pipe or sumit re routed, so shows you guys!

(mind of all yaris knowledge manages to geek through once again)

Modified rear drums available now to stop this

They have a bigger lip on to stop water entering the rear drums and partially corroding on

Not cheap though but a common problem upto about 2003 ish

I get that on mine too, as per Yvvan's advice the solution is to go for a 5 min (or so) trip around after washing so the water/soap doesnt get a chance to stick...it's only happened since using Meguiars tho, never had a problem with the Triplewax stuff I used before getting Meguiars Gold Class

unusual to only happen after a few days..but aye.. drums are thrown clear..and they do tend to stick if damp and left for a while or in winter.

but..usually a good week is required for this to be noticed.

This is why I always go for a quick drive round after I wash the car - the t-sport rear handbrake drums do it too.

If its really bad (ie been left for ages) the worst case is you have to take the wheel off and ever so gently tap it with a hammer to loosen the thin layer of rust thats built up.

The T-Sport rear hub has an outer dirt shield and a much smaller inner one that sits just behind the handrake shoes and its this smaller on that rusts over. Id imagine its the same thing that rustin on yours - only takes a couple of days.
