They are very good cars mate. Should give you years of relatively trouble free motoring.

They only really suffer from minor niggles, like rattly interiors. But this can be sorted in most cases quite easily.

Just got myself a 2002 2.0 vvti Sr petrol. Car did about 47K miles. I have recently got serviced by toyota dealer. He used 10w/40 enginue oil. Any idea what kind of mpg we supposed to get? I am getting 31.5mpg (monitored for 192 miles. 170 miles on motor way and rest on city). Is it very less?

I would have hoped you'd get more to the gallon than that! My Rav4 with the 3S-FE 2 litre and 4WD can just do that. It's also got the aerodynamics of a brick!

Would have expected more like 35, maybe nearly 40 on a run...

This has got 1AZ FSE engine. I am expecting a minimum of 37mpg. Am i optimistic?

I've just completed 1750+ holiday miles on a 2.0L, overall average 33.5. M-way was about 38 - 39mpg. keeping to m-way limits

I think getting good MPG from a 3S-FE is easy, the VVTi ones rev more and although the official figures may be a bit higher in practice they don't seem to achieve them as easily due to their revvy nature. The friend of mine with a 1.6 Corolla VVTi auto doesnt get any more MPG than I do from my Avensis 2.0 3S-FE auto and I've noticed how it needs working a lot more than the pre-VVTi engines to get anything from them, I usually get around 36MPG.

you can't beat a 3S-FE automatic. They change from 1st to 2nd at about 1600rpm.

On paper, they look pretty crap, but on the road they are very useable. Plenty of torque where you need it. They're just a pain on slippery hills.

Are you using the trip computer to tell you that or working out your consumption manually? My 2001 Avensis has the same engine. Over the course of a full tank my average mpg is usually around 31-32 according to the trip computer, but calculating it manually it works out to about 35-36. That's doing a daily 70 mile round trip for work 80% motorway at 75ish. Averages about 370 - 400 miles per full tank.

I reckon if I took it carefully I could get late 30's, but it's too much fun flooring it in 2nd! (My last car was a diesel)

Trip computer says 35mpg. I did manual calculation(filled tank. Did 192 miles. Filled again. 192/number of litres/4.5= 31.5mpg).
