hey guys + gals, im looking at modding the engine of my cynos (about time  ).

im looking to get as much performance from my stock engine (5e-fhe 1.5 16v EFI-S) till i do an engine swap later on.

im looking for upgrades in the UK. ive tried several places but most of them have never heard of the paseo let alone the cynos. im going to give Fensport a call tomorrow but need to know what to ask for.

what would you guys recommend i do, im already ordering a CAI from the states next month.

Thanks

Not sure theres much you can do the 5E-FHE has a standard 110bhp, upgrading the usual, airfilter, exhaust and de-cat, sports ECU you won't get much above 120bhp. Your best bet is the straight engine swap for the 4E-FTE from the starlet GT then giving you at least 135BHP  .

Let us know how you get on.

There isn't a lot that can be done.

Air filter - easy, won't increase HP but allows the engine to breathe slightly better and will make it slightly more responsive.

Exhaust - custom system - will add a few HP - £ 700 for full custom system

Powerboost valve - negligable improvement - £ 95

There isn't a replacement ECU, so it would have to be custom written - cost - about £ 650 - £ 800.

The most effective conversion is the 4E-FTE Starlet Turbo. A lot of these mods can't be transferred to the 4E-FTE, so don't bother and just put the funds into the piggy bank.

Trouble with the Starlet conversion has to be finding a good base unit.

Have a read of the Starlet forum though, some of the stories on there made me wish I had the cash to do the transpant! :D Other problem is the fact that the Starlet must be at a weight advantange, Paseo's must weigh a fair bit in comparison. <_<

Sera is 100kg heavier than a Starlet so performance does suffer, although the car is lower so has a smaller frontal area...

Makes it much better...

Trust me, start saving...

I see! :D

There's a Sera for sale at a garage near me, went to have a look but it was locked away for the night inside, looked ok though, no stone chips or parking dents, they're asking £2700 or something, doesn't sound like enough to me....they also had a couple of nice MR2's. B)

Sera prices vary considerably from £ 1500 for scruffy ones to £ 5000 for ones that are virtually perfect. Ones in between will each have their own merits and problems.

The 110bhp engine they come with is quite good, best IMO with the manual gearbox, but the Starlet Turbo conversion to make a "Sera 135" is well worth it.

I'll be at JAE with it, both days.

Cool I'll have a look at JAE no doubt!

yeah, people on paseopimp said the same a while ago, there isnt alot you can do to a 5e-fhe, may give a couple of places a call for prices on a 4e-fte, or i can get a 3sgte for cheap in the us.

wonder if my insurance will drop on the conversion to 1.3T <_<

may wait till im 25 anyway. with a couple years NCB would drop a bit

Thanks guys

Id like a sera or paseo as a car to put miles on rather then my aw11. I like the idea of the 1.6 VVTi 4age myself though. Individual throttle bodies, vvt, tubular manifold, lightweight internals. :) Sera's are a little pricey though as they are obviously v rare and sought after, and i think id rather put miles on a paseo then waste a sera. But a sera would be so cool.

But yeah, if your considering an engine swap in the future, i wouldnt waste much money tuning the paseo. Altho, the paseo only has 90bhp, not 110 like the sera, so what upgrades did the sera have over paseo??

Sera has 5E-FHE as per JDM spec Cynos.

Difference is compression ratio, different injectors, ECU. Don't know about cams.

I think you're more likely to find a Sera cheaper than a Paseo, most likely as dealers don't know what they've got!

I can see you're point about milage, might be cheaper to run a 'Seo as a second car? I could well be wrong though!!! :)

Many car showrooms won't touch Seras because they don't know what they're dealing with. The Paseo at least appears in their price guides.

In Japan the cost of Seras is now starting to go up, primarily because of demand from the UK and Australia, but also because the Sera is now being regarded as a bit of a classic and Japanese buyers are keeping them.
