sounds to me the brake pads are well gone and scraping the disc, expensive fix if you dont do anything about it. discs plus pads when it could just be pads required,

yes because they are too small to hug the caliper and discs and rattle about, best bet is to take a look at them .OR YOU HAVE A STONE TRAPPED SOMEWHERE

Yes they would..... there is is only a minimal gap (you propably won't even be able to get a piece of paper between the pad and disc) when your not using your brakes.....

Get the wheel off and have a look.....

Might just be a stone in the disk guard.

But check it out anyway; whatever it is you need to resolve it or else the disk will be scored and will need to be skimmed or replaced depending on how bad it is.

dont think it is the pads, I took the wheels off both sides today and ran the car whilst up on axle stands and the noise disappeared even when I applied the brakes.

However there is like a metal type pin around what i can only describe what looks like a gold sprocket it doesnt appear to be in the condition it should is this the wheel bearings?

Thats the retaining nut cover for the drive shaft. Which also clamps up the wheel bearing. You should have a split pin going through the middle of it and tabbed over at the ends. Sounds like it`s seen better days.

If you need to check the bearing, Keep the car on axle stands, Stick the wheel back on, make sure the wheel nuts are done up pretty well as they should be. Then hold the wheel top and bottom and push and pull against the car. Any play is a pretty good indicator that something`s nodgered. Usually the wheel bearing sometimes ball joint play can show up here but thats usually up and down movement and would come across as a knock over bumps etc,
