How do you know when the tanks full ...... I heard it's something to do with the hand pump clicking or something?

I don't want to fill it up and get covered in petrol like one fellow member ;) !

When the hand pump clicks off and you pull it again and it clicks back off thats when you know its full, when I filled up for JAE, I had put like £28 in and it clicked off and then I keep pressing it down and it kept clicking off, thats how I knew it was full!

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi folks.

I was Googling for realworld mileage/fuel economy stats for the Yaris Diesel and I found this forum. I've just bought one of these puppies - an 04 model.

It's a D-4D 3-door 1.4 Diesel.

I do about 80 miles each weekday, to and from work - via the M25 and some fastish single carriageways.

First week, I did 509.2 miles using 36.6 litres driving the way I normally drive. 63.3 mpg. I then did a bit of research into how to drive like a scrooge / grandad.

Well, the second 10 days, I did 650.9 miles using 36.5 litres - 81.1 mpg... much better, but I still wasn't that used to not leadfooting it.

This week, it seems that I'm going to get over 700 miles before filling up... mental maths says that's in excess of 90 mpg. This *has* to be a glitch in the fuel gauge that I just didn't notice last time round.

I will report back; but it's at least well over 80 again.

My method is basically a bunch of best practice tips from a variety of eco-web sites:

1) Start the engine and drive away. Cold starts save money.

2) No sharp accelleration or decelleration. Leave a big old stopping distance.

3) Turn off the engine at traffic lights and when you know you'll be stopped for more than 15 seconds. It uses less fuel than idling.

4) Get into the highest gear possible for your speed without labouring the engine

5) Keep your engine speed less than 2000 rpm

6) Don't do more than 52 mph

7) CAUTIOUSLY: Coast down big gentle motorway hills in neutral - although never, ever turn the engine off whilst coasting.

8) Try and avoid traffic hold-ups. Invest in a Tom Tom sat nav with their traffic information/auto routing facility.

9) Carry as little baggage as possible. Lose all the weight you can.

10) If you've got air conditioning, don't use it.

11) Leave the windows up. Use the vents instead.

12) Turn off all unnecessary electrical stuff - rear demist, fog lights, phone chargers etc. unless you need them. then they're not unnecessary ;)

13) No roof racks. They add drag.

14) Keep your tyre pressure correct.

15) DRIVE SLOWLY ;)

Follow these tips, and you'll annoy the bejesus out of everyone. But you'll save fuel and money. And you'll be late for work. :)

By my maths, compared to what I used to drive and how I used to drive it, if I drive like this for *just* the to and from work bit, every year my Yaris is effectively giving me about £1250 back, tax free. Ch-ching.

Does anyone else get results like this am I the only one sad enough to sacrifice basically *all* the fun bits of driving for a few quid?

Good advice there, personally I always leave big braking distances as I hear about hit in the rear accidents every day at work!!! The bit about not going over 52 mph sounds a bit unsafe as I get extremely annoyed by people going that speed in their cars on the Dual Carriageway...

:!Removed!: am really impressed with the economy on those D4D's, wish I had one myself now!

Mwa ha ha! Come, Join us!

Joel, I'm pleased to say that you're sadder than me! I just don't have the patience to hold out driving like a granny for a whole 600 miles.

I try and follow numbers 1, 2, 11 and 14 and I do my best with 15 (although it rarely works)

I'm glad you like the car - it really is an under-rated little motor.

Hi and welcome by the way...

Alan

I'm not being funny, but if economy is all your after why did you buy a Yaris? Surely there was some cheap & nasty car that could have saved you a few quid. Or even better, buy a bike, that way you save thousands on the price of a car & you pay 0p per mile.

There is absolutely no way I could drive like that, I enjoy driving & I would get no joy whatsoever out of driving that way. Also, people who do less than 70 mph on a motorway (big, heavy lorries etc aside) should have their cars took away & given a 50cc moped. Being stuck behind some1 doing 20 mph less than the speed limit is 1 of the most annoying things in the world.

Sorry, but people who drive that way frustrate me to death & I feel your car has so much more to offer than you're using (i.e. windows that open & close etc)

Yeah, but what he's doing is seeing what it can do. He says himself that you'd drive everyone around you nuts...

Its just like when you see how fast a car can go, how quickly you can get to the speed limit only its the opposite - a sort of "just how far can I go on this tank..."

Don't get me wrong, I love "driving" and don't generally hang around, but I've also seen how far I can go on a tank, because you "just have to"..

I dunno - makes sense to me

Yeah it's good to find out how far you can "push" your car incase of emergencies I guess..my Dad always tells me to do it.

Yeah, I can understand that, I dont think I could do that for more than a couple of drives but I can understand trying it on a 1-off just to test how far you can push it. I use a couple of the points myself but not using the windows & coasting down motorway hills at 52mph just seems like a complete waste of car to me.

Personally I'd rather have to fill my tank a bit more often while enjoying my car than not enjoy it & save a few quid but maybe that's just me. I think I sounded a bit harsh yesterday so if I did I apologise but it's just out of frustration due to things I've already mentioned.

Just one question though.

I can't drive at 55mph, and at 2000rpm - it just doesn't happen!

I think that's supposed to be 3000rpm. ;)

That's cus your drive a petrol

Diesels don't rev as much for the same speed :P

In my avensis if I do 60 then the rev gauge sits at 2100rpm.... i'm pretty sure that the revs will be higher at the same speed in the petrol....

Ahh, that'll be why then. Slow diesels and all that... :P

And I drive a car, not a "petrol...."

:D

I can vouch that the 2.0 diesel Corolla definitely is NOT slow!

It may be quick but I'm sure that an equivalent spec 2.0l petrol would be quicker.......hence diesel car's being slower than petrol although they are catching up!

I dont doubt a 2.0 petrol would be quicker on the uptake, but I'm not too sure what would happen when the old turbo kicks in.... our Corolla really is quite a nippy little beast when it gets going!
