Rubbing/scrapeing Problem On Brakes (i Think)

I picked up a 2002 Toyota Yaris T-sport on Friday and have been giving it a bit of a drive. I have come across a problem when cornering, the rear brakes make a scraping noise, almost like scratching the bottom of a pan, its exactly the same noise as if you slide your hand around the backing plate of the pads that works as a crud protector and stops you seeing the inside facing disk properly :P.

It all started when my dad tried the ABS out at about 30 mph, it worked as it should have but is now making this strange noise, doesn't seem to make any difference to braking performance but its still quite worrying.

Braking seems to stop the noise but when pulling quite tightly out of a junction its very loud. What makes it stranger is that it is not there all the time when doing this.

I thought it could be a bearing but I gave it a good shake and there’s no movement, which usually there would be with a bearing.

Any suggestions please?

Oh yeah, brake wear is fine, still plenty left on the pads and disks.

Cheers.

could be something in between the brake pad and disc

take the wheel off, take the caliper off, take the disk off (if hand brake is off but still rubbing, take it off with the adjuster, under the rubber cap on disk, wind it down to take the brake off). remove the disk, check the drum brake deflector for signs of picking up on the disk (a shiny bit where its been rubbing) and knock it back so it doesnt rub (keep putting the disk on + rotating till theres no noise) put it back togeather (adjust the brake back up with the little wheel untill you cant turn the hub, then wind it back off graduly till it doesnt catch ) then put the rest back on. the place where it rubs should be on the bottom of the shield (smaller shield remember not the disk shield).

on the drivers side too right?

Nearly perfect earpl ... but use a couple of the wheel nuts to hold the disc flat to the hub otherwise it wont turn smoothly and will sound like its catching ...

... and dont do it in the rain ....

Cheers, its on passengers side, same still apply?

Just out of interest how do you remove the caliper? Just so I know when I'm doing it, I assume its a bolt from the back?

Also I assume its ok for me to drive it like this for a little while? Just until I get a chance to sort it out? Weekish.

by any chance ur yari is lowered?? cos i have the same problem, i tried taking the wheel off and push the disc cover away from the disc a wee bit, seem to help for a while but it comes back again.

so thinking of taking to mr t to sort it, dont really trust myself taking the brake apart, knowing me i'll def forget sumthing. sumthing r better to leave it for the professional

Cheers, my dad knows what he's doing so will be able to help now I know what I'm suppose to be doing. The car has not been lowered any more than standard.

There are two 14mm bolts - top and bottom - they may need some serious turning to get them moving - nice and steady pressure does it...
