Discs And Pads

Well I have to say I am more than a little p*ssed today, so apologies for the rant.

The Yaris has just returned from her 40k service (£252) with the news that the front discs and pads are stuffed and require urgent replacement!

After only 40k the DISCS need replacement!! I'm amazed to say the least.

The cost? £272 + vat supplied and fitted, sir.:eek:

Perhaps you would actually like to spank my bare ar5e as well, Mr Toyota UK? :censor:

------------

Does anyone know if any special tools are required for this job?

I have absolutely no intention of funding my service manager's next holiday!

my tsport has had 33000 hard miles and the disks had about0.5mm of wear on both sides, ts disks are around 50 quid and i'd never pay more than 35 for a full set of front pads.

buy the disks and pads from toyota, come to me and i'll fit the lot for £50 in 30-45 mins.

Both my disks and pads were replaced at about the 45k mark. I got a quote from Toyota which was also silly money but I took it to my local friendly garage and they done it for about half the price.

Is the car under 3 years old, if it is the discs are under warranty, if not call toyota customer relations on 01737 367600 they will help you.

I thought that but maybe only pads are classed as wear and tear not discs (i no the discs take some wear but im just going on the basis they change them less frequently!) *Shrug* seems unnaturally generous of 'yota to exempt the discs from wear and tear if thats the case!

i did my sr ones at 23k but the car had been stood and they have corroded real bad, so did it for peace of mind (and they were down to metal on metal from being scrubbed at with the shagged discs

Mine were replaced at 52,000 miles I think I paid £120.00 for parts and labour.

I do belive that this was the first time they had been replaced, They where metal to metal, there was a crunching sound when braking.

It failed it's MOT because of them, That was in june.

Can I suggest trying a different dealer? There just seems to be such a variation in prices and standards.

Good luck

Discs should be a warranty item if car is under 3 years old or if you took out the extended warranty. That being the case, they might as well replace pads at same time and just charge you the parts.

We had disks on the Rolla replaced under extended warranty when it was about 4 years old.

Watch out, even if they do it under warranty they'll probably also charge you for cleaning the brakes, when in fact the reason they probably need cleaning is because the disks have worn.

Remember, the dealers get paid by Toyota for Warranty work, they're not doing it for free.

Thanks for the advice chaps, I was/am still amazed cos the discs on my Skoda are still very healthy at more than 80k.

I have a mate in a Toyota spares dept and I have managed to get some new parts for much much less than half the prices quoted, and I'll have a bash at fitting them this week.

Glad to hear you got them much cheaper, that was/is a crazy price for them to charge but I am not surprised!

Stripped the car down today and found that the discs were ok and not corroded/scored and the pads had about 75% life left in them :censor:

The new stuff is now on the car, the old stuff will serve as evidence.

The evidence will be taken to the local Trading Standards tomorrow ... not impressed with Toyots service, I thought they were supposed to be the best?

The Green pads are more than likely EBC GreenStuff pads - they're an aftermarket supplier - you can get a gold member discount if you deal with them direct too.

Ive got them on the rears of mine - better performance than the standard pads - and very little brake dust ...

Took the old discs and pads back to the local Toyota emporium this afternoon, get a cuppa coco and sit back folks;

As soon as I walked in and before I had spoken the girl on the desk told me that "they had checked the discs and pads and they were not off my car, they were off someone else's Avensis"

"Well that's very nice" says I, "but I have MY discs and pads in this bag in my hand cos I did the work on my own car after YOU said they were dangerously corroded and worn"

She backed down VERY quickly after realising what she had just said, what a giveaway!

Her next tactic was to tell me that "the pads were worn and that the discs were scored"

The discs and pads were now on the counter in front of her.

Needless to say, she couldn't actually point this wear/corrosion out to me because it simply didn't exist!

Her next tactic was to say that "they need skimming and that would take them below service limits" ... again not true cos there were no score marks, and there was plenty of meat left on them according to my guage, plenty of meat left even after a skim.

I then asked to speak to the Service Manager who was at least professional, he apologised and agreed there was nothing wrong with the items taken off my car.

All this fuss attracted the attention of a couple of blokes in the waiting area who seem to have also needed new discs and pads today, and when I suggested to the manager that they seem to have a nice little earner going on things went a bit quiet.

Make of that what you will, I am suggesting nothing.

I've been promised a written explanation ... time will tell.

Cheeky sods. Cheeky cheeky sods.

I expect pds to wear at 40k but not discs. Obviously it's dependent on driving style and also holding the brakes in traffic can cause warping if done a lot, plus the weight of a diesel engine can cause premature wear...BUT.... you don't seem like a racer, there isn't enough weight to cuase premature wear and the discs are bigger to cope with the diesels extra weight and traffic driving expected on a small town car. I say again...

Cheeky, cheeky sods.
