:help: Can some one please help!!!!! :help:

i recently bought a celica gt4 st185 uk spec 1990(H)

there is a warning light coming up on the dash looks like oil warning light but is orange, the light seems to just go on and off as it wishes

car runs great if slow driving around town ect.

but if i let my boost go up car overheats, water mainly coming from over flow but did bust pipe when problem started! Also then blew radiator cap.

the car has had new water pump thermostat ect the coolant systems seems ok 2 me (not that i'v got a clue) i.e fan comes on if left to idle, the water is pumping around the system ect. there is also no water in the oil and no visible leeks from the car

have heard somthing about water charged intercoolers causing the problem but are they not from st205?

someone plz help i love this car dont want her 2 die 1 day on way 2 work

any help or info would be much appreciated :help::help:

Heads/head gaskets will not always leak oil into the cooling system. My Levin has a very minor problem in that it builds up air in the cooling system yet the oil is clean and there is none in the coolant. Run the engine with the radiator cap off and check to see if there are any bubbles coming through while the engine is still cold or get a Tee-Kay head check done or similar. Is the car blowing any white smoke? Check that the thermostat is opening fully too. It may be opening sufficiently for low revs but as your water pump spins faster pressure can be built up... I doubt that this would be enough to blow a radiator cap though.

also there is 2 fans on my radiator and only 1 ever seems 2 work(the 1 on rear of radiator) whats the other 1 for tryed bridging it and does work do u know when and why this fan should come on?

The one at the front is the Aircon cooling fan.

As far as I know and I'm pretty sure on this there is no water level warning light. Its a shame I just sold my Celica with its English owners manual cos it had all the warning lights and what they mean in it! There is one for low oil... refered to as the idiot light... cos if this comes on you got SFA oil left in the engine! And I would assume that there is one for temperature.

The fact that it doesn't overheat when its idling at standstill shows that the cooling system is doing its job... which is why I think that you have a head problem. Process of elimination really. If you can't see any bubbles in the cooling system then if may be very minor. How hot does it get? and is it only when the engine is under load?

how much boost you running?

sounds to me like st185 thrashing mate. the ataic is pants and the cooking coolant is a common prob.

the turbo is water cooled.

if you boost extensively it will raise the water temp.

light in orange - if its a oil can then its the UK spec oil level. dont trust it - check dipstick every other day.

your running the top mount air to air cooler yeah?

right - coolant.

Make sure you have 30% coolant to the water. if problem persists add more water and less coolant.

I reccomend draining the radiator.

fill up - leave cap off - run engine, turn heater on full and get the blower going, leave it on, slowly get car up to operating temp. keep topping up - this gets rid of air pockets.

I suggest you be very careful as you'll end up with a dead head gasket.

you just bought the car, so if it's having overheating issues take it easy with the boost and keep checking back here - if I see you replying and if the thread gets going I'll help you out mate - or email me.

I have a good history of sorting overheating issues on my 185.

cheers

as far as i am aware the boost is standard and temp is not rising over half even when the coolant is over flowing. the heating in the car is not very hot does heat up but temp will drop if i have blower on high.

so if the turbo is water cooled does the system connect to engine collant system or is it seperate? cant c any way of filling other system if it is seperate?

soz if this sound stupid 2 u guys but not very fimillar with turbo's ect.

the light on my dash that keeps coming up dont think is the oil low warning light the light is at bottom of revcounter. the oil low warning light is over on left beside Battery light ect. it does look tike the oil warning light but seems to have waves underneath it? also check oil every week and is always fine

cheers for the help

Sounds the same problem that I had some time ago, most of the time temp would run OK, on a hardish run the temp would climb up (this dependant on amount of water in the header tank as well) eventaully this led to me blowing the top off the radiator!! After new rad the car still did the same thing. Had it checked by Toyota they said it was OK at first, but after a second test they found the Head gasket was beginning to go. Apparently they use a CO2 type meter to detect any gas given off the header tank. Probably the only way to test at the early stages of gasket failure.

Sorry for the bad news but its probably best to get it checked at a garage with the proper facilities. If it checks out OK then you know to look elsewhere.
