Big End Gone 58k

Hi All,

I've just had my 58k mileage 51reg Avensis 1.8vvti engine destroy itself on the motorway. Does anyone here know where I can get a new engine??

Also do you think it would be worth me complaining to Toyota because it is still under 60k. Unfortunately it is 4yrs old.

Everyone that has been involved is really surprised that a) an engine this age kills itself and B) that a Toyota engine has killed itself no matter what mileage it has.

And before anyone says, yes it did have oil in it. Even though it was using a hell of alot.

That's probably your best way to get a new engine out of Toyota since the VVTi range is now notorious for needing new engines due to oil consumption, and Toyota are replacing such engines upto 5 years old.

go for it oil consumption is a big problem see crolla section on this site the 1.8 litre is the same engine except the cc are bigger ie same faults on crolla and avensis

had you asked toyota to monitor the oil consumption ???

how much had you been using ?? per 600 mile

ask for a garage to indicate what caused it please post the results

No I hadn't asked Toyota to monitor it. I'm not sure really how much oil I used. Since the last service 50,000 I've used between 3-5 litres. I will ask them what caused the problem. The car is due to be transferred today to my local Toyota garage.

5 litres in 8 k is high and is enough for toyota to look at the bore wear measurments ie toyota say 1 litre max per 600 miles

but even this is high have a look at the crolla section on oil consumption

good luck

This should be done by toyota with a new short block engine. Toyota extened its warrenty for 5 years but toyota have not made this public only to people who have oil problems. My corolla has just had a new engine after going throught a sump full of oil in 500-700 miles my car started to show problems with 25k its now done 50k get car back in morning with new engine. Toyota know about the problem. A good dealer will change the engine has long has its got a full toyota service history.

Engines that are effected are:

1.4,1.6.1.8 (vvt-i) all from 2000-2002 they all share the same bore but different stroke.

Toyota dealer is doing the bore measurements as we speak. They also said that if Toyota won't do the job as a good will gesture then it will cost £3200 to do all the work. I think regardless of the bore measurements, a car should be good for more than 60k and shouldn't be using anything like 1 litre per 600 miles.

How long has this problem been known about??? I'm surprised they haven't recalled peoples cars and just done the work. Surely this just makes them look bad in the long run. I've read so many good things about customer service for Toyota but this does make you wonder how much goodwill there really is. Where were these engines produced, were they manufactered here or Japan.

i think engines made in the uk but over £3k for repair no way i know people who have paid £1k max

a letter to what car and talking out loud on a busy sales day should do the trick nobody will buy a car if engines only last 60 k

i agree on the recall toyota will take the engine block number because they know what cars are duff pass on to your dealer about this site

do not accept the first offer also small claims court is worth it toyota know about freedom of info act

Do you know why they are taking bore measurements for Toyota? I have been quoted £1695 for an engine and £2000 fitted by a different garage (not Toyota). I sent an email to whatcar but as you say I will send a letter if everything goes pear shaped. We plan on sending a letter to Toyota UK about this issue anyway, mainly because it's crap that a brand renowned for reliability has made some duff engines and we will be highlighting the cost of recovering our car and having to hire a car because there are no courtesy cars available for us.

Thanks for all the input from everyone, it has been really useful. I will keep posting until the conclusion.

Ok just had phone call to say that Toyota are going to cover the work that needs doing :) Have just found out that because our dealer couldn't give us a courtesy car then they should hire one for us or arrange with customer relations to get us a car, but we've been hiring one under our own steam :ffs: So after even more phone calls we may get a car hired for us and yes I will be sending them a bill for our current hire car

I think the moto of the story is keep up the pressure with your dealer and customer relations 01737 367600. Be sure of what your going to say as well and don't lose your temper unnecessarily. :censor:

So all eventually has a happy ending...

Shouldn't have happened in the first place and you shouldn't have had to do the chasing yourselves but at least now you have the peace of mind to know that Toyota themselves will fix the problem which will maintain the FTSH :D :D :D

Hi,

I see you live in newport and take it the dealer in question is Ryburn Toyota ?If it is then the Service Manager is Martin Lear. This gentlemen has still not actioned on a complaint I made in September when one of my brand new alloys was scratched during a service that went terribly wrong  .Too many bad details including a technician who became abusive when challenged to why he hadn't changed the brake fluid at 2 years as indicated on the service schedule replied it looked ok to me!! :censor:

Anyway thanks for the custmer service phone number.( they wouldn't give it to me when I asked) so I can escalate my complaint to people who will hopefully sort it out.

Good luck with claiming car hire back.

Cheers

I have an alternative tel no. for Toyota customer relations, its: 01737 363633 and their email is; customer.relations@tgb.toyota.co.uk

I'm currently complaining about something and they aren't very fast (first email sent to them on 14th Sept and still no resolution).

Hi I'm sorry to hear about the problems you've had at Ryburn. I have to say that I've had a feeling that nicey nicey approach they have in Newport was a bit false. They told me they didn't know the phone number for customer service but I just rang their Toyota UK number and asked for it. I think you have a good case, you should definately pursue it. Good luck to you also.

 progress report please alex and karen

Ok I had the car back on Friday 28th Oct, they have advised me that we should try to drive smoothly and no faster than 50miles an hour for 1000miles, so the engine can bed itself in. But that if we do go over 50 then not to worry, so if thats not sending out conflicting messages then I'm not sure what is. We asked the

dealer what would happen if this engine expires in the next 60k and basically we would need to go throught the same procedure. Basically our dealer seems to distant itself from Toyota whenever there are problems and it becomes a them and us affair where they seem to not want the responsibility.

I have to say that the car feels slightly archaic compared to the 2.0 tdci zetec Mondeo which they hired for us but then I guess 4years is a long time in car development.

We haven't finished writing our letter to Toyota yet but it will be winging it's way to them this week sometime.
