Took my Rav in yesterday for some TLC. One of the things that I wanted sorted was a slight clutch judder in 1st gear when it is cold/damp.

The dealer has just phoned me to update me on progress. All this work is being done on the extended warranty (car in it's 4th year):--

Replacement clutch

Replacement flywheel

Additional component called a Clutch Launch Control unit

New ECU to control the launch control unit

New keys to match the ECU.

Basically they say that it is a known fault and on the new Rav's this launch unit is standard fit. It is suppose to help make a smooth clutch operation!

Cost of it all including the 8hours to fit, would be in the region of £2000!!!! and the warranty is paying for it all :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Hey - top result - out of interest is it a manual or auto / diesel or petrol.

Mine judders if I try to slip away in 2nd - esp in traffic - or if I am less than careful in 1st - wondered how that compared to yours ...

Must be though that the Toyotaare brilliant - one of the reasons I keep buying their cars and extending once the original cover expires :)

2litre d4d Diesel Manual, 3year old with 53000 miles on the clock.

I noticed the judder in 1st gear when moving off from standstill - during the summer it was virtually not noticable, but as soon as the cold/damp weather comes along it was a lot worse.

The lad that phoned me this afternoon said it's a common problem on the Rav's - on all new Rav's they fit this launch control unit, so as a result they are going to retro-fit one to my car.

Hopefully my car will be ready late tomorrow or Friday morning so will report back on how it performs.

How "new" are new the new RAV's they fit the launch control unit to? Mine is 18 months old and I've noticed a little judder, especially if the car is moving slightly and I let the clutch in in first....

Sound like great news  , just imagine how much that would have cost outside the warrenty time  .

Will ask when they started fitting these units as standard when i go to collect the car. They were hoping to get it finished today, but I've not heard anything from them so I presume it will be tomorrow now.

He wasn't sure exactly when they started fitting the launch control units as standard, but seems to think it was when the facelift came out with round lights in the front bumper.

Just gonna go n pick the Rav up now, so will have a look under bonnet and take photos so you can compare.

Interesting, I've only ever noticed the judder if I let the clutch in below about 1200 revs, (so I gues it's actually 1300 revs) and in the cold I tend to rev it higher to prevent the judder.

I think I'll wait until the cold weather arrives and see if I still have the problem and if I do will talk to my excellent Mr T as I'm still covered :-)

From the top of the car, cannot see the clutch unit to photograph!! Am planning an oil change this weekend, so maybe able to photograph it from below?!?

One thing I've noticed since they fitted the unit, the judder that i was getting has now gone :) but...... 2nd gear, approx 10-15mph with clutch fully up when turning a corner, i get a "grumble" from the engine, almost as though it is about to stall - applying more accelerator it will recover from it without stalling.. Also the IDLE UP button doesn't work now (not that i'm ever likely to need to use it!)

Hi DarrenP. I presume you have the model on your description, a 1998 model? If so I doubt wether yours will have it. Mine hasn't, just standard hydraulic actuation.

Mine judders, but it's because the clutch is on it's way out. As the lining become thinner they are more prone to warping from the heat.

I'm living with it till the clutch starts slipping. I've been infomed it's an engine out job to replace

Hi Stuart

Thanks for that I should have guessed it was only on the newer models  Sounds like my clutch is also on its way out :ffs: I have only done 63000 miles , I just thought it was too early for a clutch change

Cheers
