Thebig end has gone on my 2000 Celica. This looks like costing me at least a couple of grand which is devastating. Does anyone have any advice on how to get this sort of job done?

Please help.

If it was mine I would be looking for whole engine that you can transplant. if you match the engine numbers and model type you could end up with the same block and simply swap your other stuff over.

Try looking at bigger car breakers, jap parts specialists, they import them already broken up so they will be able to match up engine No's Thay will also give you a warrantly, I have done it twice and had no problems with the new units.

I would think it is cheaper in the long run and you can do the timing belts etc with the engine out. I think the engine would cost you between £600 - £1200 depending on mileage and how complete the engine is.

Can anyone suggest suppliers I think I used a local firm called Jap parts

Anyone else had this sort of preblem with a 7? Does anyone know somewhere in the north east that can have a look in this engine and know what they are doing wthout ripping me off?

Also, can anyone explain why I need an entire new engine and cant just replace the big end? This being the bit that Toyota told me is knackered.

Never heard of any 1zz bottom end problems. They are virtually bomb proof, so you have been very unlucky unless the engine was oil starved at some point.

It depends how bad it is, you might be able to get away with changing the big end shells, but if it needs a new crank it's a hell of a lot of work. Essentially, it could be repaired, but it could well be more cost effective to swap the engine in it's entireity.

Cant help with garages i`m afraid. But with regard to the other - Mr T saying the big ends are gone is a little misguiding. In actual fact it`ll more likely be the big end bearings that have given up. The problem you`ll have is whether they have picked up on the crankshaft journals, which is a distinct possibility. If they have then it`d be a crankshaft regrind and new bearings. If not new bearings may well suffice.

In addition you have to look beyond just the big ends. If the engine has been starved of oil for any significant amount of time then you could and probably would be looking at damage to most of the other bearing surfaces as well. Crankshaft mains, Small ends and camshaft are the obvious casualties. IMO you`d be just as well to go for a good used replacement engine. At least you`ll have a warranty and piece of mind.

Was the car using any oil because there are loads of 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 VVTi engines requiring new engines due to very high oil consumption and other problems, just look around the rest of the forum. Toyota are replacing all failed VVTi engines from this upto 5 years old so it might be worth mentioning to your Toyota dealer if it's just within this age range and if it's a VVTi unit.

How would I go about finding this out. My Toyota dealer didnt even want to repair the thing.

was the bottom end banging?

it may just need a new set of bearings.

job done for about £300 maximum if so.

if it was banging then it probs needs a new crank and possibly a rod and end cap or two.

I know some mechanics mate who are trustworthy if a bit scruffy, whereabouts are you mate? i'm in newcastle aswell.

If you're looking for someone to carry out the work, Drop DazH a pm. He works in the motor trade in Newcastle and probably knows everyone who could/would be able to help.

I've just had a crank refurbished by a place up at Heaton ( think ), so there are people who can certainly help you out in the area.

( find DazH in the Paseo forum, or look for his car in the Garage link. There'll be a PM link connected to that. )

Good luck with the 7 mate.

Rich
