:( hey guys , newbie here just got my first celica :D its a gen 6 1994 gt (3sfe) im sorry to say SO far its not been as good as my old prelude !!

After buying it the big end went after 2 days ! guy i got it from in york failed to tell me they drink oil ! driving it back from york to glasgow then to and from work for 2 days killed it ! (partly my fault i guess)

so £930 later i have it back ! the new engine is also the 3sfe . My main concern is the top end performance of this car , can anyone who owns one help?

it starts to struggle after 90 (on a track of course) it goes to 100 slowly - now my old 2.0 16v prelude would fly up to 120 easy- is it just me ?

thanks in advance . :thumbsup:

i think maybe my speedo is out ?

and the exhaust is blowing slightly , would that have any serious effects on the performance ?

thanks

The 3s-fe certainly isn't the gen 5 engine! All gen 5's had 3s-ge engines. :thumbsup:

No 1.8 ST models, or wimpy ss1 with 3s-fe watering down the brand like they did with the gen 6! :P

Basically, you've bought the wrong celica. The 3s-fe is the 'economy' version, and is massively down on power compared to the 3s-ge. But they are definitely not 'oil drinkers' unless they are really knackered. You should get 1000 miles to a pint of oil.

I assume you are aware that your car is an import - UK celicas never had the 3s-fe engine for the exact reason you have found.

yeah thanks :thumbsup: i know its an import ! and i've just found out the jap gt is less powerfull than the uk one :( . the new engine had done just 76k we saw it in the car (or what was left of it ) so it should be good ! oh well

thanks for your advice , sure i will be back !cheers.

The jap GT is slightly more powerful than the UK model, as it is mapped for higher octane fuel. But there are at least three different variants of the JDM cars:

SS1 - low power 3s-fe engine

SS2 - higher power 3s-ge engine

SS3 - I think all these have the 3s-ge with vvti and 200 bhp. Also has an LSD.

Someone else might know better about the different 'SS' JDM models? :unsure:

Looks like you bought an SS1.

ss1 = Max.power (Net), kw(PS)/rpm 140 ps (102.97 kw) / 6000 rpm

ss2 = Max.power (Net), kw(PS)/rpm 180 ps (132.39 kw) / 7000 rpm

I wouldn't be so quick to write off the 3S-FE. I owned a Z-R celica (Gen 5) and couldn't fault it. Went pretty well actually.

The difference is that while the GE has two individual cam sprockets driven by the belt while the FE has one sprocket driven by the belt and the other cam driven off an internal gear drive. The FE has a narrower valve angle and produes more torque earlier than the GE for better response whereas the GE needs to be revved to get to its optimal torque range. For round town driveablility and economy you can't fault the FE head... unless round town driveability means about as much to you as what your neighbour had for breakfast. :P

yeah its handy around town ! its quick enough up to 90 but when it starts struggling above that and my brother in his golf mk4 1.4 16v :crybaby: is catching up , i start to regret leaving my prelude :!Removed!: :unsure: .....jus as well the celica looks damn hot !
