Anyone Dropped A Petol Tank On A Gen 5 Gt?

Has anyone done this job on a gen 5? Got any tips?

Since filling up last week my car has had a distinct whiff of petrol from the back of it. Actually, it's a total stench of petrol. :censor: I've had a quick look underneath and there are damp patches all across the back of the fuel tank, but I can't be sure exactly where it's coming from. It does look like it might be from the lip where the top and bottom halves join. :crybaby:

I don't know what caused it, but it suddenly happened after I filled up with petrol last week. I did totally brim it when I filled up, so I have a horrible feeling that the cold fuel has expanded as it warmed and raised the pressure in the tank until it found the weakest point.

Anyone breaking a gen 5? It looks like I will be needing a new tank. :crybaby:

Looks like it's going to be an expensive month - I desperately need four new tyres, and my insurance is due as well. I am planning to get the wheels refurbed whilst changing the tyres, luckily I have found someone who has offered to powder coat the wheels for £10 each. The leaking PAS pump will have to wait, and I think I might need a new CV joint sometime soon.

Just had a poke about underneath, and it's definitely leaking from the seam where the two halves of the tank are joined. :crybaby: I've ordered a replacement tank from TCB (~£75). Looks like fitting it is going to be fun! :(

The flange on the rear of the tank is bent upwards, so it holds water and dirt inside it. I would advise people to check this on their own cars, and clean and apply waxoyl or underseal to prevent the corrosion.

  • 3 weeks later...

Swapped the tank over to the replacement one the other week. Was quite a fiddly job, but would have been much easier with a 4 poster.

Anyway, here are a couple of photographs. First, the lip which holds moisture and causes the corrosion. I would recommend people get some underseal on theirs to stop it going like this:

This is a shot of the fuel pump and sender assembly, just for reference:
