My latest shape 2.0 auto will do over 300 miles to a tank, but not much over....320 maybe at best. But I don't consider myself to be a 'lazy' driver.

I've got a 98/S 1.8 auto. I haven't had it long and have only used one tank of fuel!. I got 33 mpg (mainly around town and on dual carriage way) which was over 360 miles. Mine has the older lean burn engine. A Y-reg car would have the VVT-i engine (not sure exactly when they were introduced) - I don't know what mpg these do. I decided against one of these because of the problem with them burning oil.

Get one of the pre-facelift 2.0's with the 3S-FE engine, I got around 34MPG from mine, don't bother with the VVTi ones, there too high-revving for the auto box to work at it's best in my experience, the earlier engines were a perfect match for the auto box.

Update!

Had the car in at the dealer.....and nothing! They couldn't find anything wrong with it.

So they are going to raise the issue with Toyota and see if they can come up with an issue/solution.

I did mention the gruff rattling noise when the engine is cold and they said that is something to do with the alternator belt and some bearings which rattle(?). A known problem which they can fix. Oh well, we continue!
