Starting Problems 01 D4d

The problem is that after having a certain amount of difficulty starting the vehicle over the last week today it gave up the ghost. It started on the first turn but unfortunatly I had to turn it off to go back inside to get something I had forgotten when I went to start it again it would not start. I had the car towed to my local garage who checked the glow plugs which are ok and cleaned out the fuel lines it then appeared to be o.k. When I got the car home it was left for about 3hrs when I went to start it once again it was a long time before it would start, in fact I think that if it had been left another hour it would not have started. My local garage says he has'nt a clue, he reckons everything else was ok and now suggests I take it to a Toyota dealer. Any one out there with any suggestions (of the right kind) as to what could be causing the problem It is not the starter the engine cranks over

It sounds like an air leak in the fuel system, if you keep cranking it over the air gets purged from the sytem then starts. If it was glow plugs the fault will be there on cold start, but once started and run up to temperature the engine should start fine for the rest of the day.

I am assuming that it turns over fast enough

You were so right I discovered that on the last service they had not tightened the filter housing onto the base of the primus pump. The thing must have been loose for some time and was due to vibration almost off I am amazed it had carried on for so long.

Many thanks
