Tyres, How Many Should I Change?

why did you choose 195/50 rather than 185/55 if there is no difference? are they cheaper?

They are cheaper -especially with gold discount. The SR has 195/50's on as standard so its not like they are going to create problems. T Sports have a slightly thiner rim think its by 1/2 inch but the width is well within the specs for the tyre. I cant think of a reason against doing it.

They do make a difference from the 185/55's.. they are 10mm wider so that equates to more rubber on the road, which = more grip. The reason they are cheaper is because they are a more popular tyre and they make more of them.. this keeps production costs down.

The difference between the heights of the sidewall is... 4.25mm the 195/50's are a little lower.

I Thought it was 4.25mm difference across the diameter of the tyre? so only really 2mm on the sidewall.

Sizes are worked out as follows......

195 = width in mm's

50 = 50% of the width.. gives you the height of the sidewall

15 = diameter of the rim.

185x55% = 101.75mm

195x50% = 97.50mm

4.25mm lower

Some companies sell Part Worn tyres.. they might give you a little for trading them in.. but you would get more selling them private.. I would hold on to them.. maybe get a set of wheels for the winter.

Ignore me!! its 4.25mm sidewall and double that across the diameter of the tyre.

Im confusing myself now.. does the car sit 4.25mm lower or is it twice that?

It will sit only the 4.25mm lower... as its a total of 4.25mm off the full rolling radius. The gap between the tyre and the wheel arch will be 4.25mm bigger too. Remember though.. the difference between a new tyre and a bald tyre is 8mm.. so you won't notice the difference at all.

Of course it will!! Its monday morning -thats my excuse!! I was thinking as if the cars sat on the diameter of the wheel -giving my 2 x rolling radius drop.

Cheers for that!!

On your 1st point.. yes, i would agree with you.. they are equally important.. but what i find at work is this.. when someone needs new rear tyres.. they ask for them to be swapped around and the new tyres to go on the front, this leaves them with worn tyres on the rear.

Now, after a lot of reaserch by one of the leading tyre manufacturers, they have found that the most common cause of high speed accidents are caused by the rear of the car loosing traction under heavy breaking and stepping out, spinning the car.. so to combat this they now reccomend that the new tyres should be fitted on the rear.

What this research does is highlight the importance of rear traction and shows us that we cant take the rears for granted. Some people might be blind to the dangers of putting used and/or worn tyres on the rear. This post has opened many car owners eyes i'm sure.

That's a good price, considering my 2 Bridgestones were £47 inc VAT and Delivery

Got them fitted yesterday too for £12 all in.

Good choice, the T1-R's are meant to be great, I have the T1-S! :)

I'd aim to pay no more than £20 for fitting!
