Hi all, first post so be gentle :)

I,ve got an 88 gen 4 gti, I,ve taken the thermostat out, with a view to replacing, I need to drive the car to go pick one up, if I reattach the theromstat housing, i take it the cel is ok to drive?

also I did the old boil the thermostat in cold water, to see if it opens, forgive my ignorance but what part exactly is meant to open?

Thanks for any advice.

you boil it it hot water , lol, watch the spring to see if it retracts , best to use a thermometer also to see what temp the water is at when it moves , running it with no stat in wont harm it for a while.

looking at the top , opposite the spring end, you should see a copper /silver disc , the whole of this area pulls down , stamped on the stat should be a number, this is the temp at which it opens, usually 80+ degrees.i'd say closed now on that pic

cheers gt4, got it now, it was closed in that case when i pulled it out and closed when i boiled it, checked on the thermostat its 82c when it opened so I,ll boil it again, just to be on the safe side, any idea how much that copper disc opens? 1/2 an inch? a couple of cm,s?

opens a fairway to let the water through--why not just buy new . beats head gasket failure.
