Squealing 2.0 Vvti

Got my car booked in for Friday for an annoying squeal when I start the engine from cold. Tried the soap trick as mentioned on here and had no effect. When the engine is warm it quietens down. It's a 2001 2.0VVTi

The mechanic reckons the aux drive belt will just need retentioning, I'm hoping that will be the case as it will cost peanuts. It does sound like it's coming from that end of the engine.

Thing is, I don't think it sounds like a slipping belt, more like a bearing. Reason I say this is because when I had a Vectra the cam belt tensioner bearing failed (twice) and it sounds exactly like that.

Anyhow, what runs off the aux drive belt? I know the alternator does, anything else I should worry about?

Cheers.

Mike

i'd have said try putting some fizzy cola on the belt, to stop it slipping, and then try looking at the pulleys (as listed above).

Previously people have talked about belt conditioner what is it and where do you get it?

you can buy it in any motor factors or Halfords, it's an aerosol application, that, if memory serves, dries slightly tacky, thus improving grip to stop the slipping that causes the squeeling.

I had the same issue on my 1.8 VVT-I. Had tensioner assembly changed under warranty.

The tensioner is spring loaded & adjusts tension automatically. If the springs weaken then you will get a slack drive belt/Squeal.

If you are out of warranty, try ringing TGB and complain that this part should last 80-100,000 miles. You may get it changed FOC. Otherwise, I reckon it will cost around £200.

Gutted! Took car round on Friday, mechanic off sick with a broken arm!

I'd rather he did it as he is my regular mechanic, so I'll wait a few weeks for him to have a look at it. In the meantime I'll try some of that 'belt conditioner' see if it quietens down for a bit.

Fortunately I have a warranty with my car so (so long as it's a covered part) I'll get done for free anyway.

Cheers guys.

Mike.
