Hi all,

Now that the clocks are going back on Saturday night and the days getting darker :ph34r:

I am looking at upgrading/changing the bulbs in the RAV for some brighter one's..

As I live in the country and it's very dark out in the sticks. What's the recomendation to go for. :)

I have seen several advertised on eBay and was looking for other users feedback on these...:thumbsup:

Generally top in the AutoExpress tests are the Osram Silverstar lamps.

It's all about the placing of the filament, some aren't made to as higher standards as others. Try and avoid any that put out a blue light. These are rubbish and are just coloured which lowers the actual light output. They look nice though, which matters more to some people.

I'm an electrical engineer and studied lighting technology quite a bit, so this area interests me.

Thanks for that Bob, If they are Osram's then that is a real bargain, I will buy a set of each H4's (Blue and +50%)

* Update, Just noticed in my local Newspaper that the advert clearly states they are OSRAM bulbs !!!!, Just hope no selfish individual goes and buys the lot at my local store and puts them on eBay.

Bloomin eck! That's a bargain! Shame they don't do HB3 and HB4.

At least they are a decent brand too.

If you do get some, maybe a small report on how they perform  .

Hi All

Visit this forum http://www.rav4world.com/

forums (D.I.Y and Modifications 4.2) - More Lumens

All will be revealled they really have gone to town on testing these lights.

The blue tints are a no no because the coating cuts down on the brightness anyway it`s all there enjoy the read. ;)

Got them here

Just sorting out some reversing lights next. I`ts all very well letting people know you are reversing but you need to know what you are reversing into, esspecially on these dark winter nights.

As posted on the Celcia Club forum they are not Osram Bulb's :( They are branded Tesla, I bought a set of each H4's +50% and Blue. Will give them a try later this week.

I am interested in upping the light out the front! Maybe the blue ones for me though!

As I said before, the blue style ones are purely for looking nice. They will never put out as much light as clear ones. In fact, all of the different coated ones are worth avoiding if it's real light you want.

I doubted they would be osram for that price, and to be quite honest doubt the quality of those bulbs too. It's not just the brightness of the bulbs that count, but where the available light is focussed to. For this, they need to be made to very high standards to ensure that the lamp filament is aligned correctly to act upon the reflectors efficiently and give a good spread of light.

One of my pet hates is people driving around with 'cheapo' bulbs, and dazzling everyone in their path! :censor: It's not always that the lights themselves are out of adjustment!

But saying that, i'm not gonna run those bulbs down. They may turn out to be the bargain of the century!! :D

The advert from Lidl in the my Local Newspaper clearly stated Osram bulbs but obviously Lidl have made some error either in what they are stocking or in the advert.

Just had this in from another source re a query on the reversing bulbs.

I'm using the Polarg M-6 for backup bulbs, which are very nice - brighter and very white. The best bulbs seem to be the Polarg Lens Type bulbs, which have a focusing lens in the top of the bulb. These things are super bright when viewed from the top of the bulb. I am using the Polarg L-15 and L-16 in the stop and brake lights now. Fun to watch the guy behind you's face turn red when you hit the brakes.

Don't waste your money on any LED backup lights - they are total junk, even the ones with 9 super bright LEDs are just toys.

Polarg make a W2 18W backup bulb in the Lens Type Bulb, called an L-08, which is a blue tinted Lens Type bulb. I have not been able to find these outside of the Japanese website, but Upgrade Motoring is supposed to have some on order in the next month or so.

I'd be careful of putting in any high wattage bulbs in there, because the space is tight and the heat might just turn your clear plastic lens yellow or brown. These bulbs don't use a relay, so you could be putting a 90W load through a backup switch that is rated for a 36W load. That would be my main concern - possibly frying the backup switch, or building up carbon on the switch connectors.

As for the H4 headlight bulbs, you can't go wrong with either the Philips Vision Plus 50% or the GE Megalight Plus 60%. Both have identical lumens ratings. The GE appears to have a longer high beam in my testing, the low beams were about the same. The Philips is made in Germany. The GE are made Hungary. (I'd prefer Germany). I have not seen any longevity tests on either bulb. I've seen different test results where both bulbs have come out tops in their tests, so anything is better than what comes stock is a big improvement. There is one website that posted photos of each bulb on low beam, and it's very hard to tell them apart.

Do all the new RAV4's have the same strange bulbs my 1998 has :huh:

My 1996 3dr had the standard bulbs most cars have, but when I found one of my bulbs were not working I popped down to Halfords to get a new one... To my surprise, they looked like nothing I have ever seen before. I though I would boost my dip beams by putting in the bulbs for the main beams but alas all though I got them to fit in the lenses the electrical connectors were completely different. :ffs: :ffs: :ffs: :ffs:

I also do a bit of travelling along some A roads at night and find my dips almost useless. The up side is that my main beams are fantastic

Fitted the bulbs I purchased from eBay (H4 Type) :D at the weekend

As I live out in the sticks they did make an improvement over the standard. The diped beam is much better and has a wider spread of light... Also much brighter as well.:eek: When I get my camera working I will take some pictures of the murchandise.....:thumbsup:
