I started work yesterday on the only mod I have planned for my 2 - a black mesh grill to protect the Radiator from stones. I know quite a few of you have already carried this out.

However, on removing the plastic cover above the radiator I was surprised to find an unused grey electrical connector hanging from the loom just underneath the nearside upper radiator mount.

I then noticed that on the drivers side of the car a similar connector is used to connect the fan which is mounted behind the radiator on that side. So it seems that the purpose of the unsued connector is to power a second fan at the nearside of the radiator?

Does anyone know why my car has this unused wiring? Should there be a second radiator fan there? Perhaps the second fan is only fitted in certain countries or else fitted to different configurations.

BTW my car is a UK N/A Mk II Rev 3 (1994) and doesn't have air conditioning.

On cars with air conditioning there is a second fan. There should also be a number of connectors for various sensors to do with air con. The standard loom has most of the connectors for the air con system already fitted.

Ah, thought that might be the case, thanks for confirming that for me Stef.

I suppose that implies that I could reasonably easily fit air-con if I wanted it. This is the first car I've had in ages without aircon, but to be honest I haven't missed it once as the roof is off almost all the time.

its nothing to do with the 'happy fun' fog lights is it?

Not much to see I'm afraid Jerry - I didn't want the car to look any different if I could avoid it.

MR2-Radiator-Guard.jpg

Bought the mesh at Halfords and it wasn't cheap (about £20 or £30 I think), but I like the fact that it's black plastic and therefore doesn't show up too much. It seems quite sturdy but has reasonably big holes so hopefully won't affect the air flow.

I'm hoping I'm not too late fitting it - from the look of the Rad it's been already been hit by quite a few stones and the matrix doesn't look great; it's not leaking though so hopefully this will save it.

Fitting was fairly easy, though the space between the radiator is a bit tight so doing up the cable ties that hold it was a bit fiddly. I did take a few pics of the process so if anyone wants more info then PM me.

yeah more info would be great ta T ;) as Skye had a new radiator fitted not long before I got her... and if this is gonna prolong its life from those evil items known as stones.... I'd prolly like to do it... same thing nothing too fancy black or mebbe silver (prolly black methinks)

:) Thanks :)

Thanks for the comments guys.

I'll post some more info soon then JJ & JP

Boundsw - I'm ashamed to say car isn't very clean. I just gave that section a quick wash for this photo as I'd got my grubby fingerprints on it whilst fitting the mesh. Hope to get it cleaned properly if the weather is OK today, though it's not looking promising!

Here are some more details and pictures as promised.

Hi!, I recently purchased an mr2 which didn't have any radiator protection and found an ingeniously cheap way of solving the problem. I went to screwfix and bought a pack of black plastic grill, (supposed to be used for stopping gutters clogging) they are just the right dimentions to slide into the cavity between the verticle air intake supports. I offered them up, and with a some fiddly tie wrapping managed to cut 4 to the right size, slid each one in and attached them together using small tie wraps. I then used larger tie wraps to secure them in place, I also pushed the ugly bit of the tie wrap round the back so it is completely unseen. The grills are black tough plastic with 1cm squares. They look excellent, ie un noticable and they are 5 quid for 5 meters worth! BARGAIN !!! Top job !!!

It's a good thread though :D

Quite a good idea of Markie Mark's too; I have some of those gutter meshes and agree they'd be the ideal size for the purpose. The ones I have also have holes that would allow better airflow than the mesh I used for my grill.

While you're having good ideas Markie, any idea on what I can make meshes for the Celica from (to fit the holes where the fogs would go on a non-C/S); I don't think I can get away with putting regular mesh in because there's nothing to fix it to, and it has to be curved. Mr T wants £50 +VAT each for the real thing!

Knew it was an old thread when I saw that Jaxx had posted in it!

My MR2 still has no mesh in it and the Rad is battered.

Thanks for passing your idea on Mark.

Just bought the mesh from my local Screwfix. £6.06 including some cable ties. That actually buys enough to do two cars. Can't be bad. Fitting it tommorrow.

I was toying with the idea of buying that Ripspeed Competition Mesh from Halfrauds. But for the black plactic stuff they were wanting silly money (around £25). This mesh is much better.
