The brakes feel perfectly normal worringly enough. When the guy had it up on the ramps yesterday I spun the n/s/f wheel and it spun freely without a hint of stopping!

:help:

I would think it's a Sticking brake caliper - if it's sticking that bad,you would notice a Brake pull to the N/S or the clutch starting to slip if the smell is that overpowering

:o

Nah it doesn't smell like the clutch and trust me, I know!

Also, the revs don't rise without it going anywhere!

Go with the Caliper then - if it was a wheel bearing on it's way out,you will hear a "rumble" from it - drive down a straight road and if you hear a noise, turn the steering wheel side to side gently to load the bearing - you should hear a change in the pitch of the noise as the bearing is loaded and unloaded by turining the steering.

Had my 70k service last week and they told me I need a new alternator (no reason given), I need a new PAS belt 'cos its worn and my front left wheel bearing was noisey and needs replaced apparently.

The mechanic looked at it today and could find nothing wrong with the wheel or brakes or anything like that. I might just get the alternator replaced and the PAS belt changed 'cos they need doing and hope its them thats causing the smell!

The quest continues... :(

Wot do I do:

1. Take it to Toyota and tell them not to phone me to collect it until they diagnose the problem or

2. Get my local garage to replace the PAS belt and alternator and hope its 1 of them causing the smell?

:help:

Or.. take it to any garage and tell them the problem and see if they can find out where the smell is coming from .

From the outset I woulda said check your calipers.... if its only binding a little it can smell very hot and a bit like burning.... if it is the calipers... and you leave it... it may get worse, and you'll end up with it starting to smoke and eventually sieze completely (generally new caliper time, or major refurb.

I had this problem with Skye (an MR2 yes I know.. bit different to Yaris and the calipers are prone to going it seems).. however it doesnt take long to check them over and do a refurb if necessary. Hey even I did it!

If you can (or get someone to), check out the seals on the caliper pot(s) ? I dunno how many a Yaris has on the front... (generally drums on the rear).... if the seals are split this could cause corroding within the caliper when water and air get in there. You may not necessarily see this from a cursory check.

A seal kit for refurbing my MR2 calipers was only about £7 or so +VAT so it wouldnt break the bank if it needed doing.

If you did a little test and werent braking heavily on way to shops (no smell) and were braking heavily on way back from shops (muchas smell) then its deffo sommat to do with the brakes hon.... better safe than sorry. I highly doubt by replacing the PAS belt / alternator is gonna rid you of the smell..

Good Luck, I hope you get it sorted hon

Update ladies!

Took it to another garage and he has diagnosed my problem. I had a bit of a bin bag stuck to the back of my front left brake and some stuck to the exhaust aswell. He has just left it and he said it should burn away before long. When he had it in he also adjusted my handbrake for me so it only goes a few clicks now. He also inspected my PAS belt and it defo needs a new one ASAP as its dangerously worn but he said the alternator was fine and Toyota were talking out their bums. It also needs a new CV boot on the front right.

Got my bill in for my front right wheel bearing today aswell and it came to £88 fitted which is more than I expected tbh. He said the part cost £35 but Toyota could have sold me it for £24!

Anyway, it should all be getting fixed this week so I'll be in a better mood next week! :D
