Idline Problem

Just noticing my first problem with my Celica.

After driving for a few minutes and then coming to a stop the engine idle doesnt seem right. It seems to be missing a beat whilst idling. Not sure of what the problem here may be. Only thing ive changed really are the spark plugs.

Also when i put the car into ACC it makes a whizzing noise, prob the best way to describe it. Just curious to what this is also.

Cars an 1.8 ST btw

If its any help my old GTI Golf(02) had this problem with its idle its seemed to also skip a beat , getting close to a stall . Its was fixed when my garage linked the computer up to it and re-tuned it or something. the problem was to do with the mix of air into the engine am sure ??

If this is any help

check the airfilter - it's dead easy to check - makes sure nothing has been sucked in.

some people have mentioned a butterfly valve on the throttle body?? which gets gummed up and then causes an incorrect air/fuel ratio - resulting in a fluctuating idle.

Is the whizzing noise constant when on ACC? You can probably hear a fuel pump to start with?? Or is it just the fans??

May well be the air filter. It does need changing but ive been trying to find a TRD one so havnt got around to doing that just yet.

If that doesnt solve it ill find a garage who can computer test it for me. Not sure if theres many in the area who'l have the equipment however!

Theres no problem with the idle fluctuating. Just skipping a beat. Not sure if its standard on most Celicas but the when i pull away on clutch only it doesnt like it and gets very very close to stalling. Not a problem ive had on any of my old cars so was just curious to that also.

The whizzing noise only comes on for a second and then dissapears. Only happens when on ACC for a second.

The whizzing noise will just be a fuel pump or similar making sure there is fuel ready when you turn the key.

My 1.8ST doesn't skip a beat at all and doesn't come close to stalling when you set off so it does sound like something is slightly off.

Try taking the air filter out all together (only takes 10 seconds) then take it for a drive (just avoid anywhere dusty!) and see if that fixes it as there would be no restrictions then.

Il give that a go tomorrow.

Onto another niggly problem ive got! The rear windscreen. It doesnt clear up wen its steamed up. Well it does but thats normally by the time ive finished a very long journey! Anyone know what could be up with it?

Only these little problems im having with the car at the moment. Runs like a dream apart from these!

a quick test for the idling issue is to disconect the Battery for 20 mins. then connect it up for a spirited drive to let the ecu fully reset itself.. migth save you the diagnostic fees - it worked on my SR i used to have and also worked on the polo i use as a beater

Took out the air filter and drove around for a bit. Car did run smoother with it out but unfortunatly didnt stop the idling problem. Ill be changing the air filter now. Whats the general view on the Blitz air filter?

Tried disconnecting the Battery also but still nothing so stil trying to find a fix for this problem!

re: blitz air filter - I wouldn't put any performance parts on till your other issues are sorted

I wouldn't put a blitz air filter on full stop.

Check for any fault codes in the ECU first,if clear then go down to your Local Motor Factors and buy a tin of Carb.Cleaner - remove your air intake pipe and clean the Throttle Body inside - if your car has done 40,000 miles or more it will make a big difference.

TRD it is then by the looks of it. The air filter needs replacing anyway so i just thought of getting a litzy or TRD panel filter and putting it straight in.

Anyway knw who supplies the TRD ones? Itl taeke a while to ship in anyway so hopefuly ill have this problem sorted by then.

Gonna try the car cleaner today!
