Hi guys i bought avensis 1.8 gs 1998 about 6 months ago,the problem im getting is when i drive it through 3 to 4 thousand revs or try to go up hills it just starts getting really sluggish like somethings holding the car back, and at that time the engine management light comes on as well now i have been to toyota dealers and they said its your oxygen sensor has gone so i swopped it with my wifes 1.8 gs 98 avensis but the problem is still there and the engine managemet light is coming on when the car is really warm.the only thing i have noticed is that when you drive it on the motorway constant for 10 to 20 mins the temprature needle starts dropping to about quatre,im just wondering has anybody had simular problem or any one knows what could be causing this,it wants to go but its like something is holding it back.

Its a good thing that the engine management light is coming on. The best thing to do is read off what the fault codes are.

Turn on the ignition, at using a bit of wire link out the pins TE1 to E1 in the diagnostic connector in the engine bay.

If you look on the dashboard again, you will see that the light is flashing a code back at you. As an example it may show two fault codes. If they were say 12 and 15 it would flash once, wait a quick moment then flash twice. Then there would be a slightly longer pause, with one flash small pause and five flashes. Then a long pause before repeating itself.

If you want it to be more accurate and not show things after having a mess under the bonnet, first pull the EFI fuse for about half hour which is in the fuse box under the bonnet. This will clear all faults. Then drive your car as normal until the fault light comes on. Then do the above fault code reading so you know you only have the codes relating to your current fault.

Any more info, just ask!

Normally yes, if the car doesn't see the fault after about three starts (I think) it clears the check engine light. However the fault should still be logged in the system.

If I were you, i'd remove the EFI fuse (or disconnect the batter) for about 20 minutes or more to clear the engine computer. It will then learn your driving style over the next few starts. If there is a real problem there, the fault lamp will come on again after a while.

Tip, if you drive carefully after resetting the ECU you can get better fuel consumption because it adapts to this style of driving. It's more noticable on the larger engines however, it made quite a difference on my lexus.
