Cts Engine Upgrade

Hello to all

i recently finished the project of ugrdading my engine with the following parts:

KnN typhoon induction kit

Hand made sport exaust silencer (rear end)

Datsek Unichip (ECU)

i must admit here (and i think that most of you already have discovered) that it wasnt easy to choose the right parts for the 2zz-ge engine. It is known that is not as popular as a Honda engine for varius tuners. So the reason i am posting this is to inform the rest of you (who are intrested) that there are some available upgrades that DO work and provide the desired result.

So....

after all these, engine performance is awsome!

in the lower end (rpm) the engine has more torque available. The lack of power just before the lift is minimized and of course, in the Lift.... it kicks *****!

i attach the performance dyno.

The blue lines are with the KnN and exaust

The red lines are the Dastek chip added.

The horsepower and torque are measured on the wheels. (there are 17% losses from the transmission)

Special thanx to "Performance Tuning systems" (greek dastek dealer). They did a great job tuning the engine.

hi,

so what is the actual bhp now? is it 180/185 bhp plus 17%?

bert

it is 180.4 + 17% = 211bhp

of course you already know that dyno results may vary according to temp, hymidity, dyno equipment itself etc...

Excellent results! I'd say you're right bert.tsport... by adding the 17% The torque increase is amazing!

Just wana ask ckapodistrias a few questions:

1) how much did the whole purchase/fitting/tuning process cost? (I already have the K&N Typhoon induction kit and TTE rear box so wouldn't need these)

2) Is it the standard exhaust with a de-cat or just a home-made back box?

3) What's the general fuel economy, reliability and driveability like?

Thanks in advance for your replies and thanks for letting everyone know about your project! Post some pics of your car too so we can see a true sleeper!!!

the dastek unichip costed around 700 euros. that includes also the tuning and dyno test.

as for the exaust, it is just a home made back box with the same pipe diameter.

fuel economy is just about the same, although i must to use only 100 octane fuel to be safe.

on the lower end the car has more torque and it is very easy to use. The lift engagement is a bit "hard" especialy on slipery roads. But generaly there is a lot of improvement all around. Notice that after 7000 rpm the performance is contant from 175 to 180. Also you can notice the difference at 6500 rpm!

fair play mate, id say you will be giving the new corolla compressor a run for its money.... but at a fraction of the £19,999 price tag....

Hi,

The car has be tuned using the 5th or 4th of the gearbox?

Tx,

Mircea

ps

Very,very impressive figures as well!Enjoi!!

i was wondering if it matters which gear do they suppose to use.

anyway, the guy from the dyno assured me that it doesnt realy matter which gear to use because the results we care about are on the wheels. then he calculates the friction losses from the trans and he is able to figure the power output of the engine.

I any case, i dont really care about the "number" of the hp produced.

BUT the differences of "before" and "after" of the dyno sheet and of course the differences on the road.

am i right?

As I know it does! For me, for instance is important to know what is the

power/torque at diff level of rpm for each of the gear's level!

If you know this can better undersand how your car behaves on the road

and on the circuit when is more appropriate to chenge the gears etc.

I forgot to mention that in 2 months time there will be a firmware upgrade in the UNICHIP ECU from Dastek, where one can enable 5 programs-settings of his engine, launch control, gear dependent shift light and MOST IMPORTANT:.....

****lift engagement control!*****

wouldnt that be sweet?

He he you're really trying to sell it to me now! :D I've sent Dastek UK and email for information and a rough price guideline, but no response as of yet...

You're looking at £411 (VAT included) fitted here in S Wales, that's with before and after dyno runs.

Yeah, not far off what I've just been told. I've just got a quote of £420 all-in from Paul Hill's @ Engine Advantage Witham, Essex (Phone: 01376 502522)

Seriously considering this as I'd like more torque lower down the rev range and something a bit different

isnt there anybody else that has fitted the dastek ecu or maybe something else like power fc commander, etc?

come on guys dont be shy!

someone on the aussie forum has fitted powerfc, its the ultimate really, allows you to change both the lift engagement point and the rev limit, you could set yourself a 5500 rpm point for the lift changeover and a 8600 rpm rev limit, you'd never drop out of the power band, and the dip in power before lift simply wouldnt exist.

thinking back to when i bought my cts, a guy at the toyota dealers told me about an adjustable ecu that has an adjuster on the dash that you can turn to change the positon that the "LIFT" kicks in.. think it was around £450. i was under the impression it was sold by toyota too. anyone??

he did say that they had never known a head gasket to last any more than 30k miles with it fitted though.. anyone?

  • 2 weeks later...

just to let you know...

1/4 mile test results:

14.9 sec

158 km/h

all that with very poor Michelin Primacy 195/55 that have done 40k kilometers.....

The engine rocks!

I'm sure you will be able to do better. I've heard of the UK factory spec car doing I think it was a 14.8.

Look back about a year or more on the forum for Nick_Johnson's trip to Santa Pod.

Paul.

Hi All,

do not wish to pour cold water on dyno figures but, there are a few issues. Chassis/ rolling road dyno tuning is a black art, You can if you wish influence figures from one run to another. The gear the vehicle is tested in also makes a difference, as I found out testing a Honda Accord VTEC, the torque curve on this vehicle was totally different in figures and shape in 4th, to carring out the test in third, indeed in 4th the vtec controller struggled to adapt to the way in which the rollers loaded the engine and so the engines charictaristics were vastly different to that published and expected. So while I cannot say your figures are wrong I would believe them more if lump had been out and strapped to a dyno, and my concern is the tuner saying the gear in which it is tested does not matter because it does especially as the engine ecu is monitoring engine variables as load, temp, road speed, throttle position etc. and so it may behave differently on the rollers to actually driving the vehicle on the road. Having said all that don't stop trying different things as I might get my cheque book out for a mod or two.

Cheers
