by trade im a honda tech, about a month ago some guy traded in his gt4 for a type r. so i bought his trade car at a snip for £1800 with full history , full 3" stainless decat .

what pressure does the turbo run at ? and can it be boosted up slightly without blowing head gaskets ect . if so what is maximum pressure . and is that watercooled intercooler any good? or shall i swap it for a front mount?

any tips would be great thanx

That is a bargain for a gen 6 GT4! I can't believe somebody traded it in for that.

You may want to try the gt4ownersclub as they will probably have a little more knowledge on the GT4's but I think you have to pay for membership there

Oh and welcome to the club

steel head gasket - 1.1 bar water cooled intercooler runs to a front mounted radiator.

Bonus's for JDM:

no salt whilst it was in Japan

Slightly higher bhp

Generally better spec - ie Air Con etc, some had folding mirrors

Cheaper Purchase Price

Bonus for UK:

Easier to insure with most companies (Exceptions being NU and maybe Churchill)

You can use standard unleaded

err.... starting to struggle now... oh you get to dim your dial lights!!

You get a factory fitted cat 1 alarm

Resale Value is higher (cheers woots  )

uk cars are worth more when it comes to selling them on! loads of people will not touch import cars for some strange reason? thats why i think its better to have a uk car .

ive just ordered some heat sheild from demon tweeks for the i/c, ive also tried to find a front mount fitting kit for an intercooler but no luck. (im to lazy to fabricate my own).

Are you ok?

I would say that neither was better - at the end of the day they are both GT4's!!

There are pros and cons to owning either, personally I would probably buy a JDM as it should be a cheaper purchase price for me and should have suffered less from salt damage, but having said that my ST is a UK one which has done 114000 miles and has not picked up any rust yet!

my 1994 jdm has not even got rust anywhere on its belly , the diffs drive shafts ,petrol tank, every componant under it is rust free.its like it just came out of the factory , every part still in its original paint.

255 bhp v's 239 bhp. better servicing cos in japan a service is as strict as a uk mot.you know its been well looked after because its had to of been.remember a gt4 is to be serviced every 3000 miles to keep it good.

what is the difference between a jap spec engine and a uk engine then?

i know nothing about toyotas(hence why im on here) but an import honda is worth alot less. now they are made in glum swindon anyway!!

nothing , jap engines were mapped on 100 ron fuel , so have a bit more grunt.uk models were mapped on 95 ron fuel.

Only while they've still got the standard ecu's in. Once you go aftermarket which you really should do if you want to boost above 1.2bar(17psi) then the difference is removed as mechanically the engines are identical.

I'm guessing it does have a cat because the !Removed! are quite strict with emissions. Even if it didn't have a cat you would still have to put one on to get it through a UK MOT unless it's pre 92

Yep they've both got cat's sat right after the turbo so nice and restrictive. The only difference between the jap gt4 and the uk one performance wise is the ecu mapping.

All JDM celica's (gen 5 on at least) have a cat. The power difference comes partly from the different ignition maps for 97 and 100 RON fuel, and partly from the conversion factor from BHP din to PS. At the end of the day the difference is so small it hardly matters, especially as we don't have 100 RON fuel over here anyway. The JDM is probably pulling timing on UK fuel most of the time.
