Report After A New Short Engine

Just done £6K miles since my new short engine - the new short engine definately sorts the problem as I can see no noticeable oil loss.

There must have been a design fault with the old unit despite what Toyota claim. 1Litre of oil per 1000miles is not normal - my old Ford Escort crossflow engines back in the `70s didn`t use a drop of oil (not strickly true)

Apologies - done 6K miles (I work in a Bank & am used to putting the £ sign a little too often)

Rather than a design fault, since only a fraction of cars were affected and not necessarily the first ones out, surely it was due to a badly machined batch getting through? I see the occasional mention here that the VVT-i engines aren't as good/reliable as their predecessors, but it seems a bit early to say apart from the bad batch that slipped through.

If you take the Corolla, apart from the fact that you get improved fuel economy and increased power, you don't have to rev it to bits so much and its much sweeter and quieter. And it's not as if you see them broken down by the roadside or, apart from the bad batch, you hear any complaints concerning longevity or reliability five years on. Since I have had nothing but good experiences with the VVT-i, it makes the doomsayers look somewhat nostalgic rather than objective.

Rest assured, I'll be straight back with a retraction if something goes wrong! But it is fair to remember that car forums of this kind attract questions and statements concerning faults and problems since it is a place to look for help.

I had this oil problem with my 01 1.6 vvt-i, the car was in service for 21 days. It had to be replaced everything except the engine block, or how to call it. My car simply ran out of oil without any warning (the oil simply burned to the stick where you can check the oil level, so i got no warning signals comming from the engine), and i had to call a trailer for help. When we took out the oil stick, smoke came out.

Yo can imagine, no warning signs at all, so who knows for how many miles was the car driven without oil. Of course i didn't check the oil daily, only every two weeks or so, but who could imagine such thing could happend. All my oil was gone in just 6000 km, and there was no sign of oil loss at all, no oil marks in the garage, and so on.

As i was told, this vvt-i engines had a problem, they came without oil-cooler, and this oil loss only was a big problem with the engines that were doing mostly highway drives, at high speeds (like mine).

No recalls were made, and if i remember, because of the engine block they cannot put this cooler, no space for the bolts, or how to express myself correctly.

Now everything works correctly, and i check the oil day by day, now oil level still marks to the "full" on the stick, even after 7000 km-s driven since the big engine service.

And as almost everything was replaced in my car, i had to drive carefully on the first 1000 km, as when it was brand new.

So, we still love Toyota, since that we bought another Avensis, and life goes on.

Sorry for my English. ;)
