Mk3 Radio Connections

Having a bit of a puzzler with my '90 Mk3. I was going to take the head unit out of my 88 and bung it straight in, but the connectors in the 90 are different to the 88, so the convertor lead I have doesn't match up.

The 90 seems to also have an extra connector, a blue one, which I presume is related to some of these models coming with that seperate CDplayer head unit.

I checked Halfords to see if there was a convertor lead for later models but the only one there is the one I have in the 88, and it's listed as fitting all Toyota's, except MR2 with active Speakers.

Anyone got any ideas? Have the connectors on my 90 been changed, or were they really different to earlier models?

The sound systems changed through out the years...

My '88 facelift (eh? no, really its a facelift from '88!!) ran the stock four Speakers off the head unit..

My '90 facelift (UK spec) I think ran all four of an amp under the passenger seat..

My K plater has six spoeakers, much larger ones at the front, CD player and an amp under the passenger seat.. all stock!

So far I have left it untouched as I like the fact that on all chavs first question is "wot stereos it got?". they cannot comprehend a modified car with a stock stereo :D

I have a feeling that the MR2 active speaker one might be the ticket  why not get onto the company that makes the converters? (is it autoleads?)

If you are not ina hurry at some point soon I hope to et the headunit and adaptor out or my old Mr2.. see if my plan works!

I was thinking the same about the MR2 lead. Seems like it's probably the one.

I have that 4 speaker setup with the amp under the passenger seat too.

Oh, also got another question, and you're very likely the man who'd know the answer.

Middle 2 vents on my dash are blowing freezing cold, even though the left and right ones and the demisters are all roasting warm.

When I think on it, I'm sure both my motors are doing this. Any ideas?

Is that on "auto" mode?? press the setting for front vents or front and floor vents for heat from all of them

I usually use setting 2 or 3. I never use Auto, and my setting 1 doesn't seem to work on either motor.

I don't really use the dash vents, only the demisters, but the small amount of air that does escape from the dash vents when they're still closed can be felt. I end up with a freezing left hand. It's really irritating me.

I mean the left slider, not the right fan slider!!! try the second or third buttin in, not the full on ventilate one on the far left!

I know that one, your resistor pack is broken. Stick your head in the passengers footwell and look upwards and you will see it at the bottom of one of the pipes.

Can sometimes be repaired but most of the time better of replacing it.

Hi, newbie alert here! I'm facing the same problem. I expect you know that there is a wiring diagram for the 1990 Mk III on the internet...

Bit delayed I know, but did you ever fix this? It's just that my car is doing exactly the same thing on ALL settings, and I wouldn't mind knowing how to fix it!

(Also I have intermittent problems with my heater which I haven't managed to fix yet - see my other post).

Did you try what I suggested?????

Use the "front vents only" switch... "auto" blows cold in the middle anyway, if you want full on front blowers, use the front blower button... if that still doesn't work... and you have already gone over the heater control panel for the dreaded "dry joints" its a not very pleasant job ahead of checking the feeds for the flkap motors, checking the motors, checking the mechanisms....

I like the broken no.1 fan speed. it means I can run through the buttons along the top and listen for all the motors working ;)

It's blowing cold no mater what the setting. I always run my heaters set to the demister setting, but I can feel the cold air seeping out of the middle blowers. My main gripe with it is that is usually rest my hand near the gearstick, so it's freezing my poor wee digits.

To back up what Mr Karma Supra says: I've just had a quick read of the Owner's Manual:

WINDSHIELD button - This button directs the air flow mostly to the windshield, front side windows and face level. During heating, heated air is delivered to the windshield and front side windows and unheated air is delivered to face level.

So I conclude that if you always use the demister setting as you say, you'll always get the cold air from the middle face blowers.

During heating the 'FLOOR' button also does hot-to-feet & cold-to-face.

During heating the 'BI-LEVEL' button - "the air to the floor is slightly warmer than that to face level"

During heating the 'FACE' button directs the air flow to face level. This would be the one to use - as you should get warm air from all face blowers, however, the diagrams show that on this setting, no air gets directed to the windscreen.

So in conclusion - If you want demisting, I'm afraid this means freezing cold left hand no matter what. This seems like a strange design decision eh? Maybe you should do a "Michael Jackson" and wear one glove?

Just close the middle vents ;) Its never bothered me before!!!

I also never worked out why they chose to design it like that either....... then again I never worked out why the 2.5TT never came out over here, nor did the aerotop... ot the TEMS suspension that suits our crappy roads so well.......

Ho hum......

The cold air still escapes from them. I noticed last night it's coming out of the slots on the control sliders as well. I'm wondering if the previous owner has had the dash apart and not put the heater ducts back together.

Now that I've fixed my heater I've had a play with the settings. With hot temp, on DEMISTER setting cold air does slightly escape from the middle face vents (even with them off). The FACE setting is also a bit crap because although all the face vents are hot, theres' no air to the windscreen.

The BIVLEVEL is great because there's hot air to: all face vents, floor vents and a little to the windscreen. (see Bottom of this website page). So if your vents are not doing this they must be faulty.

Regarding your quote: "The cold air still escapes from them. I noticed last night it's coming out of the slots on the control sliders as well. I'm wondering if the previous owner has had the dash apart and not put the heater ducts back together." - I noticed that When I move the centre switch to close them, you can see movement behind the vents, so if you can't see this (through the vents), your vents must be knackered and will need fixing - (dash out job :( ).
