Trouble With Toyota Corolla Sportif

Hi everyone, I'm total newb on this forum, but am after some advice and figured you'd be the best people to ask

Last week I was driving my Toyota Corolla Sportif 1994 through heavy rain. When I stopped the engine wouldn't start again, Battery power is there, and I think it's a problem with the starter motor.

We had to bump start it to get home.

I week's gone by and I tried it this morning, and it started. I let it run for a bit then turned it off and tried it again.. no joy. Under the bonnet something clicks but I'm not sure what. Fuses and connections look ok.

In '04 it had 'non operation of the starter motor and found solenoid intermittent' (the car came to us second hand)

So, any advice, or does anyone know a good toyota garage in South London SE19 and outwards?

Much thanks in advace.

Hi eyedropper

Hello and welcome to the club  To me it sounds like you have got ignition problems. Sounds like dodgy leads and maybe spark plugs too. Your best bet is to take it along to a dealer and let them check it over.

Sorry i cant be of anymore help but someone might come along with more useful information

Welcome to TOC eyedropper.

The click's probably the solenoid (Essentially a big switch that turns on the power to the starter motor).

Do I infer that the starter's not even turning the engine? If that's the case then it isn't the ignition circuit - it's either the starter circuit or the starter itself.

Sound's like the solenoid's being activated but for some reason the starter's not turning.

It could just be that the starter motor is sticking. If that's the case you can usually free it by leaving the car in gear, hand brake off and rock the car back and forwards. Then handbrake on, back into neutral and try to start the car again. If it keeps happening then you still need to get the starter looked at.

The starter needs lots of juice to power it. So if starter isn't stuck, the first thing to check is that the starter circuit connections are good. Sometimes they're just dry and disconnecting them, cleaning the contacts and putting some petroleum jelly on them will make a big difference.

If all that fails then it's probably the solenoid or the starter itself; you can probably get a recon one from a motor factors fairly cheap, or some places will recon your own starter for you.

Do you know what was done in O4 to fix the problem. If it had a new starter then it shouldn't be needing another one already.

Thanks for the welcome and swift replies fellas.

yup I think you're right... Both of those problems are beyond my knowledge though, so taking it to a garage looks like the only way to go.

Yes, probably best to get it done by an expert. Sorry, can't recommend anyone in your area.

The problem isn't specific to your car though - any auto electrician or garage should be able to sort it for you, so ask around your mates to see if any of them can recommend anyone.

Good luck, shouldn't be too expensive to sort it out.
