I Am Getting Low Mpg...

Hi all,

I have seen many of you talking about how economic your car is e.g. 35mpg on normal roads and over 50mpg on motorways....

My 03 Corolla T3 1.6v is only doing 28.8 in average normal city centre road, If I drive it very generously, it could get to 30mpg.. but I think it can never get to 35mpg, is there any problem with my car?

I have tried engine flushing product (redex) but it sill doesn't improve the mpg... is it too low or is it actually normal?

Have you reset it recently, that might give it a better reading.

If you don't reset often, then the more miles you do, it will accumulate all the mile together.

Such as, if you covered say 3000miles, it might give a reading of say 25mpg, but if it's been reset and you only covered say 500miles it could show say 30mpg

Give it a try, and see if computer error.

The last time i used that in my car, i got an average mpg of some 74mpg!!!:eek::lol:

Yeah same here, not talking about motorways or like that, but like car parks, speed humps, roundabouts (Milton Keynes esp :thumbsup: ) and general short roads before another set of traffic lights in me face  but still managed to gain a silly mpg

I live in Milton Keynes

so you know what sort of road I am driving on... ok, leave the computer reading alone, my T3 is doing 300-320miles per £42

How about yours?

think mine can do about 400miles before i refil, but it is up to the top, overflowing at times, i tend to shove in about 47ltrs per fill up, price wise whatever the current price is, but it's been come down recently down to 90p per litre.

Do you tend to drive fast and brake hard, that tends to raise consumpation alot as well, also having air con on and any other electrical devices tends to slurp fuel as well

if you think you are getting bad mpg you want to try my cts out for a day and watch the fuel gauge drop from full tank, in a way is quite funny cos i am sure a evo use the amout of petrol as the cts in town .

I remember years ago, when my parents use to have a 3 series BMW (316i), and i emptied a full tank from only driving Northampton to london and back again, some 65miles each way, my mum was going mad at me saying i was driving too fast, but i think the fuel consumpation had something to play about it

:)

well, I am not saying i am getting low mpg , I am saying the mpg is lower than what I saw on this forum

If everyone is getting a similar mpg, i will be happy

I think the problem here is that a combination of driver style and road conditions makes it almost impossible to compare fuel consumption between cars.

For example, here in London I have many times been in bad traffic when the mpg is around 10 - there's nothing wrong, just that the engine is running and I'm hardly going anywhere. Whereas, on a long Motorway only journey, I can get upwards of 40mpg - very good I think for a decent sized automatic car.

Is there any allowance range for the MPG? I guess there must be something which says if a certain engine consume more than a certain amount, it probably indicates there is something wrong with the engine??

Optimax will get me ~35mpg with an average speed of about 32mph. I get about 350 miles to £42. About 40% motorway, but the rest in roads around bristol. I reset the car when i bought it about 3/4 months ago.

On a related subject my 2.0 D-4D trip average shows high 60s MPG for rush hour

A-road and motorway driving. Don't see how this can be the case and will be measuring it manually at the next fill-up in serveral months .. urrh I mean several days.

Is yours a sportif as well, coz everyone i speek to says they get about 250 or more out of a tank, think i must have some sort of engine problem or a fuel leak.

i know what you mean about wach the needle drop, yesterday going down M23 to Gatwick only doing about 55-60 mph needle whent from half tank to quater in about 25 mins, i'm sure thats not ment to happen. :censor:

The average speed shown in my car is only 18mph... i guess that's why I am only getting 28mpg??

I've only had my 1.6 T3 for just over a month, and have only filled up once so far. I got 366 miles to the tankful. I've got a quarter of a tank left now as well, and done 264 miles so far, but this tankful has all been urban miles. Please could someone tell me how you reset your MPG computer? Cheers.

My CTS (when it works!) is giving 35mpg, and I drive like a ******! there is only one way to calculate fuel use, top the tank to the brim, do enough miles to get to a quarter, fill it up again and convert litre's to gallons (devide by 4.54) and devide miles on that tank full by gallons used! the dash display lies like a cheap watch!

Has anyone taken into account, that most of the car's electronics are electric and that also draws power from the engine to run them, even when your idling, an esp running the air-con

On my last fill-up, over the brim :o  , i only managed to get 300miles, and was almost at reserve, but about 3-4 times of that was cold frosty mornings with air-con on to heat the car up faster, thats how much i lost on my last tank
