Take into account as well, in this weather every minute spent in the car, for me anyway, I have the heater blaring out....so thats gonna use fuel too!

I don't think the heater should use any fuel per-se, apart from the leccy to run the blower fan - the heat is "free" in that it is basically coming from the engines cooling system, rather than having it lost through the main radiator behind the front grill. Any fuel consumption increase in winter is likely due to the extended 'warm up' period that the car goes through when you first use it from cold, during which time it is not running at its most efficient, as the ECU is trying to warm the engine up as quickly as possible largely for the catalytic convertor to work properly, but also to minimise engine wear (as a cold engine wears more than a warm engine, hence why you should never rev the ubik off a car when you first set off!).

Air con on the other hand DOES use a load of engine power, due to the fact that with it on you have to run a high pressure compressor pump off the engine. However, in winter the air con should not knacker the fuel consumption as much as in summer, although I'm not 100% sure why this is :)

EDIT: LOL - the choice of the word "ubik" was not mine, but I like the quirky sensorbot! :D
