Hi,

Im thinking about buying a toyota ae86 and want to find out as much info on it as possible. I understand it comes with a 1.6 sohc or dohc engine and is rwd with an lsd(main reason for buying! last car was a sunbeam lotus  ). Other than this I dont know too much :( , so ill ask a couple of questions:

What exact engine specs do they have, power ect?

What years were they poduced?

How hard is it to find a decent one?

How much servicing do they need?

Where is the best place to get parts/are they hard to find?

How much should you pay for a decent standard example?

Cheers for any info, in the mean time ill try and find out some more on them!

Hi Mate,

getting quite difficult getting a 'decent' one nowadays (by that i mean a rust free example..!)

Lot of imports are coming into the uk now though but differ slightly..

The UK AE86 starts from 84-A reg to 87/88 E-reg being the very last ...

They have a 1.6 Twin Cam 16v Engine about 125bhp as standard..

Servicing wise just your regular oil/filter jobbs about every 8-10k... Cambelt 60k

You can still get parts from Toyota but dont know for how long...? Fensport have parts and everything can be sourced from Ireland if you a rough one that needs work....

FOr a decent ae86 youre talking anywhere from 3k to 7k..

OR cheaper if you find one privately off some1 that has owned it for a while and doesn't know what it is really worth.. Keep an eye out on eBay and stuff.... even your local papers/freeads....

Cheers Rash.

They use the 4AGE... 1.6 twin cam 16v. Put out 122bhp. Very revvy engine. Great fun, not super quick though. Yes 86's come with LSD as standard.

If you had a sunbeam lotus then you'll be familiar with a rear live axle. 86 has this with a 5 link setup (5th link being the panhard rod) so its well located. Pretty much the same as manta or chevette.

They are light being under a ton depending on spec.

Loads of tuning options available, from cams, ecu's, to engine transplants such as 4AGE 20v to 4AGZE supercharged engines.

Pricewise a stock one in reasonable nick can be picked up for 3grand if you are lucky. Most have been modified, realistically i would say 5K for a decent one which will probably come with uprated suspenders and maybe some engine stuff like cams etc.

I'm looking to get one in the near future and realistically i would say 5K, maybe more. If you buy one cheap it will cost a fair amount to sort out.

Only worth what an enthusiast is willing to pay,,

Unless you know your way around them I wouldnt even think about buying one now,, Just because the asking price is high doesnt mean the car is mint, Ive seen loads of import 86s lately that were well rough.

They are just a fashion now because of drifting but there are far better drift cars available for a fraction of the price + modifying and sourcing parts is well expensive.
