Clutch Problem

:help: just purchased a gen 5 gt4 (5 week import with full mot) and when the turbo's near full boost in 4th and 5th gear the clutch slips , i've asked around and have been told that its something to do with the adjustment of a rod near the clutch pedal?? can this be cured by this or is it a new clutch?, cars runs great otherwise but not been able to trust the cars overtakingness (is that a word?)

many thanks in advance to all that help

Welcome to TOC Dojomaster0,

Not sure about adjustment - I'm sure someone who does know about this will be along soon though.

Do you know whether the car was used a lot prior to you buying it?

I had a similar problem with my N/A MR2 when I first got it. Very rarely, when setting off quickly up a steep hill for example, I'd smell the clutch burning and feel it slipping.

I think it was something to do with the car not having been used much before I got it. May have also been me being new to the car - I maybe didn't get right off the clutch quickly enough in these circumstances.

Anyway, hasn't happened for months now and I'd almost forgotten about it until I saw your post. Might be worth seeing how you get on with it for a while - just be careful not to rag it too much until you know.

Regards, Tony

the rod on the Clutch Pedal is merely there to adjust pedal play but if it is adjusted incorrectly ie: too tight, then it could possibly cause the clutch to slip.

hopefully this is the case because it's a very big job to fit a new clutch to this car

hmm , thanks for that i may try to adjust the rod and see if it helps but i think i may be pulling on the balaclava  and visiting some post offices to fund a new clutch, any ideas on how much????

Check the pedal adjustment first a few guys on the GT4OC have had similar problems recently following new clutches and it turned out to be the freeplay not adjusted properly.

Failing that a new clutch itself isn't too much few hundred pounds for the standard one, it's the fitting that the killer. It can be done without taking the engine out but it's a right ubik of a job and chances are most garages you take it to will want to take the engine out.

If you can find a decent one the Mr Clutch chains seem to do it without taking the engine out, but as with an chain there good ones and bad ones. If you decide to take it to one of them try and get a recomendation for a good one, and check it before you leave, seen a few they've done where they haven't put all the bell housing bolts back in.

And get yourself over to GT4OC.net and join up great bunch best place for anything GT4 related, and if it turns out you need a new clutch you'll cover the £20 joining fee in the discount on it if you get it from fensport. :D
