Engine Management System

Not sure if I am imagining this, but, anyone else noticed how little power is available with a cold engine ? It`s as if the engine management wont give you any decent bhp until oil/water/engine temperatures are upto decent figures (which seems very sensible on the face of it).

If you start your engine up from eg. overnight & temps are cold - try accelerating strongly & I`m sure engine management throttles back the power.

Anyone else noticed this or is it just me ?

Dont own a VVT-i but its not good Engineering Practice to rev any engine

strongly from Cold until the oil has circulated fully and there is some temp.reached( unless its a Company/Hire Car of course).

The majority of engine wear occurs in the first few minutes of starting.

Very true & I understand this - I`m not talking about high revs here just a lack of acceleration from cold. If it is the management system causing this I can certainly see why. It maybe just me that notices this or am I imagining it ?

I'm not aware of the ECU retarding the Ignition Timing during the Cold start/Warm up cycle unless it's to

reduce Emissions as the Catalytic Convertor does not work untill it is up to Temp.

On Electrically Controlled Automatic Transmissions, the ECU does !Removed! the timing for Drive/Reverse gear selection

to reduce the amount of "shock" and give a smooth gear engagement.
