Hi everyone, lost me turbo on a trip back from Skipton on bonfire nite.

I thought that if I describe the symtoms to someone with more experience of these things than me,I would most likely get the right reply. So here goes,

Model:1990 GT4x4 Turbo ST185 Jap Import,3S GTE.

Travelled down to Skipton about 90 miles from my place,(Newcastle)no probs at all, turbo fine,no noise,no smoke.Watched fireworks, spent money, ate a **** burger then set off for home.Got all the way back to Scotch Corner and pulled in for petrol, checked under bonnet, small amount of steam coming from crack in rad header tank.Temp gauge had not moved from normal previous to this but I could smell leaking water if ya know wot I meen. After cooling the rad down and topping up I set off again taking it easier but noticed a distinct lack of performance!

No Turbo! It still drives smooth & quiet with no more symtoms other than that. Please help, I dont want to go delving in if its just something simple!I dont know enough about turbo's, or the complex electronics that control this superb car. Thanks in advance to you all,Mick

check for ECU error codes firstly , it may of gone into "SAFE MODE" .other than that al i can add is check all the vaccum pipes , no holes rips tears or any fell off.

Thanks BOOSTER, checked everything that was obvious,no probs,as I havn't got the facility for checking error codes I stripped the intake side to see if it was anything mechanical and found the damn thing to be siezed.looks like its gummed up, can hardly turn the impeller blades.

Is it worth pulling it apart to free it? or has anyone out there got a turbo for a gen5 ST185 3S gte,if so let me know.

You only need a paperclip to check for error codes!

Seized turbo = :crybaby: Is the ct26 water cooled? Possibly related to your coolant leak. Make sure you sort it, and double check your oil feed when you replace the turbo?

Best place for a s/h replacement turbo would probably be gt4oc.net. I think it's straightforward to swap to the gen 6 ct20b turbo, which would be worthwhile in your situation.

Yep it water cooled so sounds like the water shortage is the route of your problems. Might also what to check for HGF.

Turbo wise you've got a few options

1. get your tubby rebuilt (Good time to get it changed for a hybrid as well)

2. Get replacement CT26

3. Get replacement CT20 (ST205 Turbo)

What ever you do your gonna want to sort that leaking radiator out or it'll all happen again :(
