Hi, I own a W-reg Toyota Avensis 1.8 GS and have been having a problem with spark plugs breaking up. I regularly have to change them and I have also changed the leads and coils but to no avail. Has anyone got a remedy for this or come across it before?

Are they the correct plugs eg platinum tipped, right heat range and correctly gapped ??

Stay away from Champion plugs if you can - go for Denso or Bosch - it makes a difference.

How often do you have to change them??

Whats breaking up - the electrode tip, insulater cone ??

Hi,

I had the same problem and cured it by buying toyota genuine plugs whisch are 'Iriduim' tipped and last upto 60k  . Unfortunately they are £15.00 each inc vat :( , but when I added up how much I had spent on platinium plugs over 35k it made good sense  . The reason is that the engine is a lean burn type that inflicts very high temperatures which leads to spark plug rapid deteroration.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Nick

The plugs that I am using are also genuine Toyota parts and it still seems to occur. About 500 miles after changing the plugs, the car starts misfiring and jerking when accelerating and a black line, which appears to be a burn, starts appearing on the insulator cone and eventually this creates a crack in the insulator cone in the first and fourth plugs only.

How many plugs have you gone through?

Has anyone checked the coil packs?

This may point to high combustion temperatures which may mean your engine is running too lean.

It could be something simple causing it though, like the lambda sensor. It may not be bad enough for the management system to show a fault code.

What torque are you tightening them up to?

Could very easily be that you're tightening them down too hard and damaging the plug
