I've just got the car for a run about plus i like the fact its got a big boot -

I'm not mechanically minded so I'm sure theirs a perfectly good explanation as to why my Carina is drinking oil like I drink Stella!! it also seems a bit heavey on fuel its a 1.6 XL

A wet and dry Compression Test will tell you if the rings/bores are worn and causing high oil consumption - Toyota state the maximum oil consumption is 1 litre per 1000 miles( which is a lot ).

If its a Carina E, then:

You could start by removing the EFI fuse for 30 seconds( in the fuse box next to the battery) to clear any codes in the ECU, give the car a 10 mile run and check for any fault codes stored in the ECU.

If you do not know how to check the ECU for fault codes - go to :

http://www.troublecodes.net/Toyota/.

If no codes are present, then give the engine a service,

Change the spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter and engine oil+filter.

Get a tin of carb.cleaner and clean the INSIDE of the Throttle Body and throttle butterfly and check the breather hoses are clear.

Hope some of this helps.
