Fuel Leak

Hi,

I have a 2001 Avensis 2.0vvti and over the last week or so I have started smelling fuel when driving. It has got progressivley worse now and gets very bad when stationary at lights etc. When moving it is ok.

I've had a quick look inderneath and can't see any fuel anywhere and the smell seems to be coming from under the bonnet somewhere not the tank. I've had the engine trim/cover off and it all looks nice and dry around the injectors(also, do they use invisible spark plugs or something??! couldn't see any)

Is there any 'common' faults with the fuel system on avensis' or has anyone had anything similar and could give me some advice before I have to investigate a bit more?

Also, I've heard autodata cd's mentioned in other posts for finding servicing details etc. Does anyone know where I can locate one of these pref as cheap as poss?

Thank you all

Dale

the plugs you look for are beneth the engine cover (10mm nuts) and then between the cams at the top of the engine (phillips screw-driver if i remember right), they have a "coil-pack" per spark plug, which is basically a coil per plug (like a motor-bike), so there is no need for leads, like the "cars of olde", i personally have not heard of any fueling problems on them, i'd say check all the connections for the fuel rail and piping to and from the tank and the air filter ducting and piping, especially all those small vacumn pipes, also, it might be worth trying some injector cleaner then looking again.

They often leak from the Fuel Filter banjo bolts if the banjo washers

have not been renewed when the filter was changed.

I ended up taking the car to my local toyota dealer as the smell was getting totally overpowering and when I got home I noticed fuel was dripping down onto the exhaust(which worried me a little!)

Anyway, I am now poorer to the tune of £588 as apparently the fuel pump had cracked and was spraying fuel out. It had to have this replaced along with a few other little parts like hoses etc.

I thought I may have been able to get a pump cheaper myself but after ringing round it appeared that it was a main dealer only part costing £426 +VAT :crybaby:

I know main dealers are supposed to be trustworthy but when having to pay out that much money you can't help thinking maybe they 'saw me coming'

I suppose there is no way of knowing now if the pump was the problem and not just something minor.

I feel a bit let down by my supposedly 'reliable' toyota, it's not exactly an old car and has only done 59,000 miles.

The mechanic told me he has never known this to happen before and I was wondering if the same had happened to anyone else?

Regarding AutoData cd, if no-one knows where I can get a copy, could anyone tell me what is required for 60,000 mile service?

Thank you

Sounds like an expensive fix to me. You might`ve been able to get a fuel pump from a scrappy for considerably less and got a good independent garage to fit it.

As regards the Autodata CD. I don`t know where you`d get one from. I got mine from a friendly garage. It`s a 2004 issue so its pretty well ok for most things.

If you let me know what engine your car has i`ll let you have the service info. I think it`s probably the 1AZ-FSE ???

Hi Daktari,

I thought about 2nd hand but needed the quickest fix possible as without a car I cannot do my job. As it was, toyota only took 1.5 days including ordering parts which I was quite impressed with. Price was still painful though!

Yes, my engine is 1AZ-FSE and any details you have on it would be helpfull to me as I'm doing all routine maintenance myself.

Thanks
