How Much To Fix A Speedo?

Hi all,

Im seriously thinking of purchasing a 182 celica gt today, the problem is it has a broken speedo, so I was wondering if anyone could list what this might be due to, and how much it could concievably cost to fix. I'm hoping for a fuse or disconnection but i'd like to know what i might end up forking out for it.

Also is a celica clutch difficult to replace yourself? I have moderate mechanical ability, am currently dis-assembling my FD3S Mazda RX7 which is teaching me a great deal!

Thanks in advance....

I have a feeling that the speedo is driven electronically, so the most likely fault is the sensor in the gearbox. S/H parts should be cheap enough whatever is at fault -see TCB, details in the stickies.

The clutch shouldn't be too bad, probably a fairly typical job on a FWD car. I guess if the car needs a new clutch and the speedo fixing, it should be cheap as chips.

Hi - Welcome to the club

I'm no expert on the gen 5 but I'll post what I know why you are waiting for the others to reply.

Speedo - Depends completely on what is wrong. I think it uses an electrical speedo rather than a manual cable. Most probably the sensor in the gearbox? Could be as simple as one of the connectors has become dislodged. I doubt it would be a fuse as other stuff would stop working as well.

Clutches normally aren't too easy and going from the price that most places charge to do it they must take a fair while to do.

Sorry I can't help any more but I'm sure mikeb or daktari will be along soon with some suggestions

*edit* told you mike would be along

Thanks very much peeps,

I did have the gearbox sensor in mind, glad to hear it shouldn't be too steep to replace.

The clutch did feel a bit odd to me but it could just have been me, I just thought I would find out incase i do need to change it in the near future. Luckily I don't need the car on a daily basis so I can take my time to change it if it is a long job.

Yes I think I have found a pretty good bargain here, 90 H, gt model £700. I can't see myself finding on much cheaper. It has 17inch alloys and a stainless steel backbox, black, good paint, good mechanicals etc etc

so fingers crossed its a winner :)
