Back Support Collapsed

Recommended Posts

My first post here :help: ...

I have a 1998 Rav4 2.0 GX 5dr. I have noticed that the right side back support ( closest to the door ) of the driver seat has collapsed  . I had a 1996 3dr that did the same thing, is it just me or is it a comman problem ????

Anyone know if you can get a replacement foam inner, apart from the dealers. My seat covers still look like new, it is just the support that has collapsed.

Thanks ;)

welcome to the TOC  .

Thanks for the welcome Bob King

I did not notice the support had collapsed at first on my 3dr. I was giving the seat once over with a vacuum and noticed the seat looked skew  .... On further inspection I found the right side back support ( closest to the drivers door ) had collapsed :ffs: ..... After that it I noticed I was sitting skew in the seat.

Now the same thing has happened to my 5dr  ... Both times it was the driver seat :!Removed!: :!Removed!: :!Removed!:

Cheers

I had the same thing happen on my 1998 Corolla and had the inner replaced under warranty - TWICE

It's a bad design the foam inner is just that - foam and there is no supporting framework to support it. If you lean on the side of the seat when you're getting out it stresses the faom and it eventually breaks away. My solution was to replace the front seats with ones that have a frame from an MR2.

We had a Rav4 of similar vintage in the other day, with exactly the same problem, we took it to an upholsterers who replaced the foam, it was as good as new.

Good Luck

Well yesterday I decided to attempt to fix my drivers seat

I managed to pull the front seat out within 5 min :D . After I got it up stairs I found it very easy to pull back the seat cover showing the problem. The whole right back support had torn away from the rest of the seat. The edge of the seat frame has a razor sharp edge to it and had cut into the support from behind. From that the rest of the support had torn all the way through. I bought some spray on glue recommended by the staff at Halfords ( there is a first time for everything ) and it was brilliant stuff. I first stuck the support to the frame  ( not glued on before ) and once that was firmly stuck on I glued the two torn pieces together. I then went a bit further and cut up an old pillow case and glued that over the tear for extra strength. Job done. After I had reinstalled the seat all in all it only took about 3 hours and most of that was waiting for the glue to dry.

The seat feels great again :thumbsup:
