Thinking of getting a GT4, but my dad says the are mechanically and engine wise un-reliable>>> is this true.

He is a mechanic and says he has had fixed many popped pistons and head gaskets on these GT4's ???

so theres a topic unreliable or the dogs <the spuds of lurrrrvve>kks, i drive a 91 GTi 16 valver >>> would the GT4 be a lot better aswell ( performance, fuel etc )

Also thinkinf of get6ting a De-CAT pipe for the GT , are these any good ?

does your dad eat pork pies for dinner , maybe he's telling you a few to avoid his son crashing into a tree at some time in a gt4 - the gen 6 gt4 has a steel head gasket and only blows upping the turbo boost , the gen 5 is also robust like a tank head gasket failure maybe is an option but would take some serious uncare and bad driving to get it to blow.

He knows what he's on about i think he is just stating genrally. So they are quite a strong engined car then.

He aint worried about me ditching into a tree >> he was just saying.

The GT4 do look cool >> but i do remember a lot them being re-paired. turbos's and such like.

used to havea supra 3.0 turbo >> so was fancying getting another turbo again >> thats why i was asking

( got baaned , insurance wass too much for supra )

If it's got a turbo and all the extra toys then there is a little bit more to go wrong but it's the same with anything - add extra parts and you've got more to go wrong.

Compare the GT4 to any other Turbo'd car and it is really reliable

In standard form, and if properly looked after (decent oil, changed every 4k miles), they are just as reliable as any other car. It's when people start messing (modding) them by increasing the boost that weaknesses start to show up. There are safe(ish) limits but generally increased performance = decreased life.

I thought that would be prob the case >> all the people i knew who had GT4's modded them and then moved onto Cosworths ( modding those aswell )

suppose they design an engine to produce a power output, so that kinda of speaks for itself.

The celica Gt is ok >> but kinda isnt what i thought it would be, performance etc > its a phase 5 so its got less BHP than the newer versions, its ojnly got 60,000 on the clock so i guess its probably acting as it should.

think i might try and get my hands on a GT4 -- if you guys are saying left alone they are good and re-liable

Just my 2p`s worth. I expect being a mechanic your dads probably heard the worst horror stories about every car on the planet, which is pretty usual in the motor trade. What does he drive? I`m sure i can find something bad about it

A lot of the horror stories relating to any car let alone performance cars can usually be put down to one or two things. Lack of maintenance and disregard for the vehicles mechanical condition..

The GT4 is as reliable as they come. The Gen 6 is going to be an obvious choice as evolution dictates improvement. My Gen 5 has 125K on the clock is running 1.1bar (Albeit in small bursts) and is still ticking like a swiss watch. As with most mechanical things, you`re only going to get out what you put in. With a GT4 this means regular oil changes at 3K using good quality oil and preferably genuine MrT filter. And don`t skimp on the rest of the servicing. if you get a good car to start with and look after it the rewards will be breathtaking.
