I have just been looking through the forum for bits of advice etc, and can I say Its a great forum :) Anyway im looking for one about 1995-98ish, either the ST or GT (whichever one i can get a good deal on really). Im fiding there are not too many about in my area, so at the moment just waiting to find the right one. If anyone has any advice or one for sale please let me know.

Hi - Good Luck with finding a nice example, be patient a nice one will suddenly appear

I'm guessing you've read on here about the differences between the ST and the GT??

If not here is a quick summary:

ST Pros:

Cheaper Insurance

Better MPG (35-45)

Sporty looks without all the cost

ST Cons:

95-97 ish ST's all seem to use oil like nobodys business

Not as fast as the GT

GT Pros:

Faster than the ST

Doesn't use Oil like the ST does

Normally more body styling (sideskirts / spoiler etc)

GT Cons:

Insurance is more expensive (for some reason for me it's the same as a GT4)

Not as good on fuel consumption

If you are after an ST it might be worth looking for an SR special edition, these came with nice 16" alloys, Side Skirts, Spoiler and Air Con, a 98/99 would be best to try and make sure you avoid the oil problem although I have never heard of anyone with an SR having the oil problem

Thanks for that info. Are there any other common faults I should be aware of? Due to insurance and fuel etc I am trying to get the ST, hopefully a P or R reg. But if I come across a nice GT I will be tempted.

Also I notice that most of the celicas around 95-98 that are for sale have 17" wheels, is there a reason for this or will the accomodate bigger ones?

Don't go bigger than 17" with the wheels, or it will drive like a roller skate. There are no real weak points to look out for on gen 6 celicas (except for the oil consumption on the ST, but there's no way to find out about it until it's too late).

At the moment the GT seems cheaper to buy than the ST (possibly because they are more common), but you will probably end up paying more for insurance, depending on your age.

I thought there must be a reason why no one seems to have bigger wheels than 17". Not that 17" ones arnt big enough, I just wondered why. Do most of you get your cars lowered then as when i was looking at the pics of all youre cars the wheels seem to fill the arch on most of them, although the ones ive seen for sale with the 17" dont.

I have looked at insurance on the imports but it is far too much. Im 23 and some companies wont even give me a sensible quote on an ST. Ive got it to about 800 for a ST 1998 and about the same for a 1995 GT, but with the imports it shoots up to about 1200 or more. Direct Line is the cheapest ive found so far.

hi and welcome

I am also 23 and drive a 94 Gt import - my insurance is about £1100 or just under cant quite remember but its not too bad as i just wrote off a prelude and had another write off a few years back :ffs: Direct line were the cheapest by far !

I would advise you to get the Gt over the st as most st drivers will admit after a while the power or lack of it gets a bit annoying ! (dont buy a ss1 gt)!!Plus the oil storys put me off an st , last thing you want is the big end going .

Good luck

The autotrader one is giving my crazy quotes of 1500!! Im going to go fully comp and have 2yrs no claims. I think about 800 is the cheapest im going to find, thats for a 98 st, its only about 650 for a 95 one but im going to scrap that idea due to the oil problem.

I keep thinking that if i get the ST i will soon get fed up and wish i got the GT, but with the money I have I can only afford either a 95 GT or a newer ST (like 98ish). At the moment I only drive a 1.4 megane so i think even the ST will seem poweful to me, lol.

I have found an ST that I like, it has AC, spoiler, nice wheels and is a good bargain and its a 1998, I havent been to see it yet as I havent got the cash ready, but im hoping it will still be there when I have the money ready.

I went from a 1.4 Megane to my 2.0 SS2 does seem very fast when you first get in it but you get used to it after a while and start looking for more power. I personally say get a GT or SS2 more mods avalible to you if you ever wanna upgrade anything.

Do you find parts tend to be more expensive for imports or about the same?

Luckily my fiances dad is a mechanic so i get things cheaper anyway, im just thinking that some things may be harder and more expensive to get hold of?

Has anyone got a pro/con list for imports compared to UK celicas? Besides the insurance aspect. Sorry if im being a pest

I wrote a bit of pros/cons list the other day between the two:

http://toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=44982

If you don't mind me asking - how old are you??

I'm only 23 with 3yrs NCB and my insurance is about £500 F/Comp with Directline. I got a quote from Churchill for a GT4 at £740 F/Comp (and they said it was the same for import or uk models)

One thing that brought my insurance down was adding my wife on to the policy even though she is younger and has less ncb (Adding me to her policy also brought her policy down!)

try giving adrian flux a go especially if your thinking of modding in any way  just renewed my heavily modded gt and they havent charged me a penny for the mods .

also if u go gold they also knock 10% off for owners club!!!

but DONT tell them until they give the quote.

as everybody else says you will not regret buying a celica as they are absolutely bullet proof.

have fun and welcome to the club

oh by the way my insurance was £450 on mine :D
