4a-ge 20v Head Conversion

Wondering if you lot can give me some advice.

I've been offered a 20v black-top head from an AE111 for my AE86's 4A-GE engine. I'm unsure whether it's worth getting it fitted on its own. Would the increased flow rate and efficiency work with the 16v block and ancillaries.

The 20v head will need a complete valvetrain to fit (valves, retainers and springs), which will probably cost a fortune too.

Any ideas? :help:

Alrite Joe, theres one word for your question, and that is...... NO!

Ive fitted a 20v lump in my AE86, which is very cool, and with the ITB's as std (Individual Throttle Bodies) it makes an awesome induction roar, the performance isnt that great yet, but i need to have it re-mapped, as im running Omex engine management system.

If you were to fit that head, you would have to get some 20v pistons as they have the 5 scolops in them for the valve clearances, then you would have to buy(from Japan)/or get made a water system adaptor kit, as the water pipes come from the back of the head(next to the bulkhead) which is a !Removed! tight fit!, unlike the 16v where they are at the front!

Then you would need all the sensors/wiring loom and ECU from a 20v (or go for a seperate management system like me) to run the engine as the 20v has VVT!

Then you would need to re-design the fuel pipes to the fuel rail, then the throttle cable as the 16v is too short! Ive found that MA70 N/A supra cables work well, then the servo pipes have to be modified to take a vacuum off of the ITB's (but if you havent got the ITB's availible you could get a set of carbs)

I could go on and on mate, but to be honest it aint worth it, depending on what you want to do with the car! Mine is for track only so ive just gone mad over the top modifing! :D

Oh and plus the 20v block/bottom end is alot stronger and also has bigger oil ways and extra oil jets to squirt at the bottom of the piston skirts due to the extra RPM's the 20v can do!

Heres a little piccy of my install! :D You dont want to feature it in Banzai do ya! :P :D

Mate,

You're a superstar. That's exactly the sort of information I was wondering about. I was beginning to think twice because a new valvetrain was going to cost in excess of £1000. I didn't know about all that other work either, so it looks like you've saved me a serious headache. Cheers!

As for a feature on your car, please give me a buzz on 01732 748000 and we'll have a chat about it…

No worries mate, glad i could be of assistance! :P

£1000 is !Removed! rediculous, you could get a whole 20v lump for that!
