Gearbox Worries

Hello everyone,

had my gen6 for a few months now (love it!!) and no problems but recently it gets difficult to select 1st gear and sometimes 2nd. It seems its only when the car is cold so I'm hoping its just something to do with that.

I don't know much about gearboxes etc.. but please tell me its not a sign of anything expensive - I'm pretty poor at the moment :(

Start by changing the Gearbox oil and clutch fluid - if the car has done

more than 60,000 miles and your not sure of the Service History,

it's a good place to start.

You can also check the gear selection quadrant on the top of the gearbox

where the gear lever cables join - get someone to sit in the car

and run through the gears(engine off) and put a few

drops of engine oil on the Quadrant guide block.

If the car has had a hard life,it will be wear to the 1st/2nd Gear Synchro.

Hub - but unless it gives you major problems with gear selection,

you can normally live with it.

Had that with mine. Turned out that it was the clutch. Had that changed and first gear now slides in nicely.

I had tried different gear oil, additives to the oil, etc, but they hadn't worked. It was definitely the clutch, in my case

probably best to have the clutch adjusted and see if that makes any difference... at least thats a cheap way to find out.

thanks lads, think i'll try changing gearbox oil and clutch fluid first then think about changing the clutch. Is a new clutch expensive??

could put up with it i suppose, if it doesn't get any worse but I have to sell her in 10 months and this little problem won't look good.

You can adjust the pedal height and freeplay on the pushrod on the master cylinder but the clutch its self is non- adjustable.

You should have approx. 3-6mm freeplay on the pedal.

A change of oil should help especially as the overnight temps are below zero

making the oil thick and slow moving untill the oil warms up.

AT180 - SAE 75W/90 gear oil

ST182 - ATF DEXRON 2

ST184 - ------//---------

ST185 - SAE 75W/90 gear oil

Someone has borrowed my later ST200 Data sheet so cant post up

  • 4 weeks later...

Does anyone know if 80W 90 is much different than 75W 90? The guy in the toyota dealer said it was OK for the 3s-ge but he didn't have any 75W 90 anyway. don't know if I trust him <_<

If 75W is too thick when cold (which it sounds like), then 80W is going to be even thicker. So it could make things worse, unless the existing oil is really bad.

If it's ok to use ATF (Dexron II) in the ST202 gearbox (the st182 can use either)- then this stuff is thinner than 75w-90 and will give you smoother changes (at the slight expense of slightly worse wear protection).

I'm starting to experience simillar problems with my gen 6. So I think I'll get the gearbox oil and clutch fluid done next service which is in january.

Is it a difficult job to do (thus costly)?

I have a few related questions; my 6 has done about 83.5K miles and I don't know if the clutch has been replaced. (the service history is a little scetchy)

Is it a good idea to get it done now and is it an expensive job?

cheers guys

does anyone know if a gen4 3s-ge gearbox will fit a gen6. Also how much difference, if any is their between the g4, g5 and g6 3s-ge engines - i mean the main block and head not the ancilaries - like manifold, injectors etc.
